how to handle this

say that you got out of a relationship with someone. a friend of yours begins to hang out with you to cheer you up. you two hang out for about two months. you see it as a nice friend thing, but they are interested in you. about a month ago i met someone. i really hit it off with them and have feelings for them. i know that my friend who has been hanging out with me has feelings for me, they are picking up some of my hobbies so we could have some common ground. i want to tell them about the new person i met while not losing my friend. last week i was invited to dinner by my friend, i did not reply. i was spending time with the new person. it has been a week and i have not spoken to my friend. i feel bad that i have ignored them. how should i confront my friend and tell them i just want to be their friend and that i like this other person.
