Well, the question was finally asked...

Rachel asked about the ex today.

She e-mailed me (I was at my best friend's house at the time), and said that she was too nervous to ask me over the phone, but wanted to know if I was over my ex.

My response, in not so many words, was that I was, and I would talk to her on the phone as for the reasons why/etc. depending on what she wanted to know.

So:

1. What do I tell her? Girls, how much do you want to know when you're asking this sort of thing? She knows her name, and that we went out for four years. That's it.

2. Is this a sign that she's thinking long-term? My best friend (who's a female) says yes, but this is just all weird to me for some reason.

3. Is there any other way I should respond?

Well, you can tell her the truth, which as I understand it, is that you're completely over her.

You could tell her more of the truth, which is that you were never completely into her in the first place. That might get you into trouble.

Telling the whole truth, that you never got into your ex because you weren't over the one before her would definitely be a mistake.

Rachel's actually been fantastic so far. I'm excited for the first time in a long, long while about a girl.

Yeah. What she really wants to know is actually about her, not the ex. In fact, I would recommend phrasing the enthusiastic statement in exclusively Rachel-referencing terms. Not, "I haven't felt this way in a long time", which might bring to her mind the question of when exactly that was, but rather "Wow. I really like the way I'm feeling about you."

Until you're ready to say, "I've never felt this way about anyone before", don't bring up your past feelings for other women, because women are crazy and insecure.

Believe me. I know.

Yes, I know the thread is old, but I was out for a week, and when I came back and saw that you had posted a thread that no one, not one single person had replied to, I thought that was terrible.

And it seems that without you, there are very few people that will answer the "regulars" questions. New people seem to want to get their advice, then run off.

I was in San Diego, doing the big Meet the Family thing with my boyfriend's family. He also got to meet my Grandma and other assorted relatives. Everything was swell, except for the fact that his mom had us sleeping two rooms apart from each other.

Do I have to marry this guy to get the same room?

excellent!!! you know i've found that those with the name matthew are really cool and usually really handsome and charming. there's just something about that name. if i have a boy i'll have to name him that, cause i'm pretty sure it's a guarantee that that boy will be good.

It was weird, we had that conversation last night. I think she wants to call me Matthew, but she's afraid it'll offend me for some reason.
