Is he serious?

I was having a serious conversation with a guy about something. We started talking about potential partners and he asked me what kind of guy I'm looking for. I told him I'm not looking for a specific type. That I'm just looking for someone that loves me back. *silence* He suddenly became quiet then looked at me with puppy eyes. Then he started joking around. Telling me that he loves me. He normally doesn't joke about serious things. So was he really joking or was it his way of saying 'i love you'?

he's just shy, so he tries to tell you in a humorous way, which would in fact make himself feel better.

At this point, he's probably just joking around, and his shyness may play a role in it. Kinda' like breaking the ice on such a serious topic, but either way, it leaves us wondering about it. If he says those words to you again, with a more serious tone and look on his face, then it means something else. Good luck.

I would take it as a joke, just to be on the safe side. If he really means it, eventually he'll come to realize that he really messed up by telling you that way. Then he'll be sorry. Then he'll grovel. That will be fun.

he wasn't telling you that he loves you, the two of you aren't even a couple.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I know what to do now. I do know that he doesn't like making the first move etc. He likes to know for sure that a girl likes him back. He prefers the girl to make the first move.

He's very insecure about himself. Yet I don't know why because he has no reason to be insecure.
