When is a relationship official?

Me and this guy have been extremely close for the last 2 years..except we're not going out..as in he hasn't actually asked me out. I still refer to him as my boyfriend in my posts just so its easier..but we don't consider our relationship a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. We've kissed and stuff..but we haven't had sex. My question is..when is a relationship actually considered official? cos right now i know that we aren't. I always thought that it is considered a bf/gf relationship once you start dating.

I would ask you then, what is Your definition of "official"?
Then I would want to know his opinion as well. The word, "Dating" is just that a word, it is up to people to find out their levels of commitment in a relationship. Yes, I know this is ironic coming from me of all people, but it is clearer to see for me from a distance than close. If that makes any sense.

Yeah i get what you mean. I guess i just wanna know when a you begin to refer to one another a boyfriend and girlfriend...seems pretty trivial, but its just a thought.

Your feelings are never trivial. That was a shared belief by someone near and dear to me at one time.

The moment you set the ground rules and the moment your relationship becomes exclusive. Without this your relationship is pretty much open to interpretation. Why not talk about it with him?

From the time there's a verbal agreement on exclusivity is from the time I've always considered the time when "someone I'm seeing" becomes a girlfriend.

looks like a relationship, sounds like a relationship. well what is it then? well you still need the verbal agreement like charlie said.

Even if you read between the lines and determine that you have something, it won't mean anything until he says it out loud, even if you were having sex. Charlie Boy is right- there has to be an agreement of exclusivity for it to mean anything.

Are you interested in making it into more of a relationship? Do others treat you as a couple? Does his mom think you're his girlfriend?

Yeah we've talked about actually "being together" after the hsc ( that's like a major exam before you enter college/university for those of you unfamiliar with it). Others don't really know that we are as close as we are. They think we still can't admit that we like each other..but that's only cos we keep things kinda between us. And our parents don't know that we are together..we talk on the phone like every night or so..and my mum suspects that i have a boyfriend..kinda complicated.

Oh, I guess not everyone's up to date with online social-networking.

Facebook is the new myspace, except its bigger than myspace ever was. Most facebook users are college students, although many adults are also starting to use it.

is there any reason you can think of why he wouldn't want you to be official? he obviously really likes you.. do you like.. kiss n sturrff on a regular basis? or is it just.. something that happened a few times randomly?
