It's a coffee alternative.
It was used when coffee was short on hand.
New Orleans still blends chicory into their coffee, and just today I had a pure chicory brew.
It's actually quite delicious and eerily similar to coffee, but without the caffeine.
Look for "New Orleans blend" coffee, or "Cafe Du Monde" coffee at most supermarkets. It's really good. My dad has been drinking it for years, and it was the first "coffee" I got into drinking, without realizing a percentage of it was chicory.
