I decided I need guitar lessons. So I went to the music store around the corner and inquired and got an info sheet with a number for their guitar teacher. I was gonna call him but then I decided to look on Kijiji to see if there were any cheaper options for individual lessons instead of group lessons, and I found this attractive-looking guy who's apparently really good, so I called him and now I have a lesson with him on Wednesday.

I decided it would be good for me to have butterflies (until I meet him and realize how skilled the photographer was). Just for kicks.

hahahaha. sooo I just looked up directions for how to get to this guy's place.

Turns out if this doesn't work out I can just hang out on the street corner and wait for Irish guy to show up. He lives a block away.

I gave guitar lessons from late high school through college.

In late high school it deteriorated to her father paying me good money to have sex with his daughter.

In college, the girls paid me their OWN good money to have sex.

What's with that?

What do you do? Just post an ad in newspaper? Do you hire some room or get them to come to your place straight away?

my ex gave guitar lessons... to his bosses son, so I guess that was ok :P

Different things. If people know you play the guitar, someone will eventually come up to you and ask if you give lessons. Get a few students, and the word will get out. I never placed an ad in the paper, but in college, I put flyers up on campus bulletin boards with those little tear-offs with my number on it ... that seemed to work. I also taught on-premises at a local music school on Saturdays, but that was mostly kids. For my private students, I would either go to their place or have them come to mine. I would give a small discount if they came to me. Not a bad job if you play well and can read music ... the pay was pretty good, and I had more pu**y than a pet store in my wild, younger days.

I'm going back to Uni next week, so I might give the tear-offs thing a try. Thanks, it's a great idea!

What kind of material did you teach your students? Did you have to have something structured for them or it's a kind of thing where anything goes? (byo and I'll teach you how to play that). Did you need some kind of certificate or you just figured 'I'm good enough so I'm doing it'?

P.S. How much did you charge?

You have to remember, Mish, that 99% of your potential students are musically ignorant, and another 99% of them have no idea how difficult it is to learn to play well. Their main interest is that it's cool to play the guitar. So the problem with "byo and i'll teach you how to play that" is that they'll never come close to being able to play what they want to play without years of practice. One thing I never had to face back then is video games like Guitar Hero, which encourages the irrational belief that it's easy.

Naturally, the turnover is VERY high because they quickly learn that they are not going to be able to play like Eric Clapton in a month or two. But once in a while, you get serious students who are willing to do the work, and are patient enough to take the time. That's what makes it worth doing even without the sex. ;)

So my main goals in general were 1) to teach them how to read music; 2) to teach them how to tune the guitar; 3) to teach them how to do simple accompaniments with chords; and 4) to develop the necessary physical skills to pick and move around the fretboard. The more promising students, I would take from there, and often teach by example instead of reading from charts. The VERY best, I would ask to try to imitate what they hear, and give them critique and suggestions.

For the beginners ... we would work from standard beginner's books that can be found in any good music store. I don't know what's available now, but to keep interest higher, I would also include charts of chord tablature for simple popular songs. If all else fails, you can teach them the introduction to Satisfaction! :D

I always gave extra time on the first lesson so I could set up their guitars. Beginner/cheap guitars are almost unplayable ... especially by weak and uncalloused fingers. The main problem is the strings are set way too high just to compensate for the unevenness in the height of the frets. I would remove the strings, place a 2 foot metal straight edge along the fretboard, and file down all the high frets. Then, I would use a small triangular file and deepen the grooves in the nut. Finally, I would replace the strings and lower the bridge until the strings start touching the frets, then raise it just a bit. THEN I would give a lesson to allow the strings time to settle so they wouldn't have to play an out of tune guitar for a week.

I was charging $15 for a half hour lesson 10-15 years ago. I suppose you could get $20-$25 today. No extra charge for the sex. No certificate needed.

Yeah, but you would have learned better with a competent teacher ... how to play the guitar I mean! ;)

Seriously, for the record, I always offered serious music instruction to serious students. I only noted the sex benefits because I always wondered what the attraction was for guitar teachers.

Also, for the record, I never mentioned a student selling her body ... I think I said buying mine. :P I don't undertand it either.
