Freedom to decide?

Hi all. Let me start off by saying I am not now nor have I ever been suicidal. I thought this might be an interesting topic of debate and didn't know where else to initiate it.

So recently I met a young lady who has many psychological problems. One of them is that she has been suicidal in the past and now is on drugs to keep her from doing it. When I was in my teens it seemed to be the "In thing" to be suicidal but could never get into the club. When I was younger, especially when I had a friend who was suicidal, I wanted to do everything in my power and then some to prevent them from going through with it. As I have gotten older I'm starting to see the deeper reaching implications of preventative suicide measures. We have a right to privacy so long as we are not hurting anyone else by constitutional law so why can you be "arrested" and hauled off on a 51-50 without evidence or due process? Suicide is a selfish act but is it against the law or even wrong? Who are you or anyone else the person to decide what another person does with their life as long as they are not hurting anyone else?

"But suicide hurts the people close to them!"

It may emotionally but that doesn't constitute a crime.

People can do what they want with their body. It's does not have direct harm to any other individual, nor does it have direct harm to society. However, parents has the duty to care for their child's emotional health and teach them the value of life.

I think the reason a person can be taken in to a psych ward on a 5150 is to prevent them from acting impulsively. A lot of people who commit suicide are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, which obviously impairs judgement.

I think if your suicide will cause a lot of emotional distress to the people you love then you shouldn't (and also probably won't)

I feel sorry for the people who are serious about suicide but who have nowhere to turn, no one to help. Forced to take violent, risky measures because society is too selfish and squeamish. I despise the morally righteous assholes of this world.

I support calculated suicide.

EDIT: Though, they should save some money up before hand so their family isn't hit with the sudden debt of funeral costs.

I agree with the impulsive bit, some people do it under the influence of depression or stress or drugs or immediate situation that could be resolved by other means. Though I also agree that in some situations where a person is in never ending pain or a vegetable it should be a viable humane alternative.

The way I see it.

Nobody is gonna arrest you if you're already dead.

So do it right the first time.

Yeah see thats another thing. I HATE people who throw the word suicide around for attention. People who actually do it rarely have a history. If someone wants to kill themselves they will be successful.

Guys, we don't encourage such topic to be discuss here especially under "personal development" forum.

Please post something more useful.
