People sabotage relationships all the time, because:
They're unhappy but have confrontation issues.
They have abandonment issues.
They have self esteem issues.
They have committment issues.
They have emotional intimacy issues.

Yeah, don't just throw us females to the wolves. People, men and women, have a tendency to let their issues run their relationships, and therefore inadvertently sabotage things. It's not intentional, but people with the aforementioned issues tend to be selfish and needy and lack the skills to be giving and loving in a long-term relationship. Most of the relationship work ends being about dealing with one person's own issues, and less about growing together as partners.
I say long-term because most of my relationships with men with issues started out wonderfully (best foot forward, of course) but definitely hit a consistent downward slope eventually. I find it usually takes a few break-ups, or one doozy of a break-up to inspire these people to want to better themselves.

my ex-bf has heavy emotional baggage (enough to fill a cargo plane) and insecurity issues. one tries hard but the subconsciousness is quick to react with projections of the past if he is not careful and self-aware.
