My employer doesn't know I'm leaving in 2 weeks!
Which is too bad, because they've pretty well established they want to keep me around, but that wasn't the case months ago when they were laying people off left and right, and nobody felt safe.
They created a culture of fear and apathy, and while I believed I would survive the majority of the lay offs, I didn't expect to be one of the last men standing, or even that they would have more jobs on the way. I mostly kept my lips locked about my move to Philly, and the one time I mentioned it, you can bet the word got back to the foreman very quickly and he was asking me when I was moving and I just brushed it off in a way that he forgot about it.
Hell, I even outlasted him.
I am a bit down about the fact they intended on keeping me, because I'm about to roll into being unemployed soon, voluntarily.
There is an older man they've recently made a superintendent, and I really respect him, and he told me he wanted me on his job because he wants to compile a "super team", but his jobs are not prevailing wage, (in other words I get 3 dollars less than I'm making now), and while I really appreciate the sentiment and the opportunity, I had to let him down easy today. I told him I'd prefer to stay on this current job as long as possible because I make more money on it.
And that's the truth, however, I also don't want to disappoint him by working on his job for 1 week before I quit, I would feel really bad about that.
Fortunately there's still a lot of work to be done on our job, though technically we're supposed to be finished. And I couldn't have asked for a better time to be working so much overtime. I'm definitely ending this chapter on a high note.
