where do Dr. get their training for surgery

alright, this is probably something that would be considered controversial, however a lot of us are unware of this subject. WHERE indeed do doctors get their training for surgeries?? sure, a lot of it takes place in classrooms on dead bodies, but what happens when they do their first surgery??

of course, you have never heard a dr tell you that this is the first time that he will be preforming surgery. and why do you think that is?? he doesn't want you to be scared that something will go wrong, or maybe it's because it is NOT his first time. but then where do their get their first real practice for surgery?? yup, you guess it, they still practice on you, BUT your out cold and probably will never know that a recently graduated student had just preformed your surgery, and it wasn't really the dr that you thought was going to do the actual surgery. scary ah??

well this topic popped back into my mind after having a discussion on it last year. when you're out cold, not all the time, but sometimes, a dr will bring in his class, (this goes on a lot in universities), however he will bring in his class and explain all the procedures during the surgery. some of the students might actually part take in the surgery. and there are times that the dr is only there to supervise and watch over, make sure nothing goes wrong during the process. and while we're all pasted out, there is nothing we can say because we won't remember this incident.

remember a while back when a women was admitted in the ER room. AND she was molested by one of the nurses. he f*cking ejactulated onto her, luckily she vaguely remembered and sued. but come to think of reality, how would you feel if a student, STUDENT had just preformed your operation, and it was his first time??

I can kinda give something on this one. I dated a guy for 10 years while he was going through med school. Yea gross as hell. And yes they do practice on DONATED cadavers. The schools are supplied with so many per year, and actually the bodies are used so many times and so are the internal parts. Sounds gross but true. And after so many uses, at the end of the year the Medical Students have a ceremony for those who donated themselves. After so many years of that, the medical students do rotations in the hospital for so many years. Yes, the people are informed that they are working with "Dr.'s in training" per say. Each medical student has to have a rotation in the hospital in every department. And they also will do rotations at different hospitals throughout that program.

When you specialize in a certain field, you then have additional training. Such as surgical or obgyn, etc. Believe it or not, these med students spend more time than you think training in their field. Yes, there does come a point where he/she will have to perform their first surgery, but they are supervised. I dont know how they approach the person, or even if they do come right out and say "Youre my first surgical" (relationship ended 6 months before he got his degree). But, I do know he assisted on several surgical procedures during his rotations in the hospital.

Personally, I do know I would want someone who has years of experience depending on the procedure. Like right now, I may have to have spine surgery, oh hell no do I want a newly graduated Dr., but I would agree to have that person WATCH. Just dont touch my spinal chord buddy.

But I believe from years of being with him, that its not like they have book training and then perform, theyre so involved in every aspect and have so many opportunities to get their training, that the those receiving treatment are aware of their "newness" to the career.

To be honest, I dont think I'd care if a student had just performed the operation on me because they would be supervised and they wouldnt be allowed anywhere near me if the doctors thought they couldnt do it. Everyone has to start somewhere, and you probably will never know, so what does it matter?

What do doctors call their careers? They call it a practice. Yeah it means that the medical profession isn't perfected and they can't just fix everything easily and quickly, but it also means that THEY are never complete masters of their field. Doctors practice on cadavers in medical schools but just like anything else their first live surgery is their first live surgery. But when you think about it it doesn't really matter. No one is going to have their doctorate without extensive enough training and testing to be able to deal with any kind of situation in their field. I know that living with a doctor for all of my life until now. Whenever we go to family gatherings and someone has a medical question my dad rattles off all these seemingly nonsense words and a treatment. So yeah, regardless of whether its their first surgery or their 1,000th the doctor you have is qualified and there's nothing to worry about.

no no no.. i know that doctors get a lot of training...HOWEVER, there have been many incidents where the patient was not told that this well be class held during the surgury. this was another philosophical question that we went over during one of my many lectures last semester.

i personally would feel a bit more timid, if i was about to have brain surgery from a virgin.

Firstly, incredibly dangerous operations would be handled by a specialist, not just someone green out of medical school. The kinds of procedures used as learning material to new doctors are going to be things that aren't so critical and are also able to be monitored and corrected easily. I don't think it's something to worry too much about.

I'm the kind of guy who would actually volunteer to the newbie and give him/her a shot at the real thing...knowing full well that it's probably not the most ideal of situations for me..but they all have to have a first time, and if someone else is too nervous to accept it, I'll take one for the team. All the seasoned veterans had to have a first time too..and if when they all die, we don't want to have a bunch of first timers.

But I think the way it works out is: The rookie and newer doctors or students will perform their operations on the poorer patients..the ones on medicaid and medicare, more than likely. I think they do this for delivering babies. I think my Mom said that she pretty much had us with students..of course, under the supervision of an established doctor. But you can bet that a billionaire will have nothing but the best touching them, but they'll pay accordingly, too.

I'm pretty sure that that's how it works. Also free clinics and whatnot. Also, lesser prodecures. Cause maybe they're nervous with an appendectamy, but when that becomes routine and mundane, it wouldn't bother them that much to work around that area or do OTHER surgical removals.
