Tipping?

I've noticed the odd post on here about it. I seems to me that tipping is a big cultural thing for Americans (at least going by the people I know and the characters I see on TV). If someone doesn't tip (or even someone who does, but doesn't tip enough) can be considered to be cheap or even be considered an "ass" for doing so. Like it's rude not to do so. The convention even seems to extend to doing the actual maths as though an specific amount is need as not to be considered cheap or rude, and even a penny less would be heresy.

On the other side of the pond, besides "keep the change", we don't really tip in Britain, the exception is Taxi drivers (I don't know why they are special, even my ex-taxi driver girlfriend doesn't know). I guess the thought is "Why should I give you money for doing the job you are being paid to do. A job which then usually add a 'service charge' to my bill anyway".

I can maybe see the point if the person in question is doing more than they are required to do in their job description, but not for just doing their job, surly? One person told me they tip waiters (and other serving staff) because they used to be one and they know how much of a bastard some customers can be. But what if I'm not a bastard? Why should I tip?

So, what's the deal?

It's absurd. I've been on lots of buses where the bus driver has a can at the front asking for tips

ASKING for tips is not appropriate. But the practice here is (in Canada and US) I'll tell you why.

Tipping is mandatory for the servers. Here's why. As a server for 5+ years...

When you come to eat at my resturant, and I serve you and you and your partner eat $50 worth of food. And you tip me %15 (which is $7.50). I do not get to keep that. I have to tip my kitchen 7.5%, busser 1%, bartender 1%, hostess 0.5% and food runner 0.5%, service kid 0.5%. These are mandatory tips you HAVE to tip out as a server. That means I get to walk with 4% of tips which according to my example is a measly $2. I don't think many people know you have to tip out soo, soo, soo much. So yeah I think it's "cheap/ rude" to not tip and pisses me right off.

Even you don't tip me, guess what? I still have to tip out. Which means it comes out of my POCKET if you don't tip me. And nothing is worse than serving some of the assholes (yes, some not all customers are ASSHOLES) that makes for a god freggin' aweful night.

Yes, you can argue that we get paid already but do you realize that typically you get minimum wage, and tips is really the only benefit of serving? Servers work hard, (or should) to please you.

I read that women with big boobs get bigget tips.

From men, MAYBE. Depends what type of resturant. Those trendy, ritzy resturants downtown where theyhire based on looks yes. Because you're going to attract the patrons who like to judge and tip servers based on looks. If you work in an resurant that's much more family owned, operated and geared towards families, not a chance. The patrons here tip based on income and level of service.

From women you often get stiffed. I am a woman but generally speaking women are the cheapest group of patrons.

Here, waiters get BELOW minimum wage because tips are expected to make up for it. They usually get paid $2-3/hour. I always tip 10%, unless they fück up my order. For example, there is a burger joint I go to about once a month, and I always get the same thing - plain hamburger with fries. Last time I went there, the stupid heffer even asked me "Do you want a cheese burger or just a plain burger?" She brought me out a fücking BLT with cheese! WTF is that shit? "Oh I'm sorry, I thought you said BLT, not a regular hamburger, teehee." GOD DAMNIT, get the cum out of your ears! I was polite and I tipped the bitch anyway, but I only gave her 5%.
