I just don't understand- please help!

Been getting closer to this older guy for a few years now. We meet up occasionally (always at his house). Nothing happens like what I'm sure you are thinking. I have invited him around my flat lots of times but he always comes up with an excuse.....why won't he come?
I decided that I was going to try and move on from him and decided to go ' no contact'. I was doing really well and had gone nine days when we normally speak everyday. He text me yesterday to wish me a Happy Birthday which was slightly early. I replied and thanked him and said you are a bit early. He didn't reply. I sent him a couple of texts later and they were all ignored- what is he playing at? What should I do? Please help!

Why did you break the no contact? He just wanted to see if you would reply, and you did. Stop texting him and keep ignoring him.

I know....I just hate being rude and not thanking people for birthday wishes. He finally replied to me and said that there was nothing going on and that as he has a tough few weeks ahead as a family member is ill.....he needs some space. :(
