What do you mean by connect? Usually people on dating sites, or internet social networks, or games etc, usually form emotional, mental, or spiritual bonds with other people. Physically no they don't connect. Feelings can be very real, and the emotional and mental attachments can be very real just like any other relationship in life.

It is possible, but really depends on the two people chatting. What their motives and intentions are and how they perceive relationships online.

Perhaps fantasy_fiction: Is usually the one's that say I have a relationship offline and this is just a game. Some people do have fiction fantasy relationships and role play online.

Real Relationships: They will tell you their motivations and intentions. I am single: They are most likely open and honest and not really into playing the online games, but may use it just as a platform to interact, voice, and chat. Like I was in a virtual reality classroom we used just so we could meet, learn, and share like this, but still had our avatars. Some colleges have used the virtual platform. Doesn't make the class any unreal than one's offline. I've been in virtual poetry groups, writer's groups, art groups, religous, spiritual groups. So yes their are different platforms in the virtual world where you can connect with real people on the other side of the screen and for close relationships.

I have friends all over the world, and no we can't afford to pay trips to fly around the globe, so we skype, email, share on what platforms we can through social networks. There are many communities online healthy and unhealthy. No different offline. You can have negative and positive relationships, groups, and organizations offline. You can have deceptive and honest people in your life every day.

As my bf said last night relationships can be fiction and fantasy if you keep it online and never have the intention of meeting and having a real relationship. So yes, he does have a point. We met online, but both had the motive and intention from the start to take it to the next level offline. I've also stated above a person will tell you right off the bat when you meet them whether they have no intention or motivation to know you offline. As I remember back, they are pretty blatant about that, and take their word for it. If you go into an online relationship with someone and they say it's just online, it may not be the realtionship you really want unless you intend to agree and keep it just online. The key is to be open and honest about what you exactly want to experience and find, and not lie to other people. The deceptions, lies, and dishonesty is what harms other people. Which their is alot of, but just as offline you have people that just want to have sex with you for one night, or be players, or mess with your mind, no different online. Those are all real people online that live offline and usually if they are deceptive, cheat online, bully, insult, and lie online they do offline too. Usually a persons true character will come out online because they feel they can get away with everything, the dark stuff comes out, the deception, the lies, and you really get a good picture if they have children offline and married and searching for emotional affairs.

It's not for everyone, and not healthy for everyone. You do have to be objective, and aware of peoples personalities, as well as see through their motives and intentions. If you have a mental illness sometimes not the best thing for you. Usually if you have a mental illness offline to begin with, yes online you will have one too.
