If this happened to you on a date....
Here's the story.
I've been casually seeing this girl for about a month now. I say casually because it's been limited due to our work schedules and has consisted mainly of a few quick lunch dates and phone calls almost every day. Plus, she's a single Mom with a five year old. We've done a couple of 'family' type things like McDonalds and the amusement park with the kid.
Friday night we had our first 'real' date. She called and asked me if I'd like to go hear a band and dancing after work. Great. The two of us alone at night finally. Went to a pub on the beach, good conversaation, went outside on the patio and the ex-boyfriend shows up and sits down at our table. Nice enough guy, but I got pissed that she was paying attention to him (it didn't help that I had a couple of drinks) and I, without saying anything got up and went to sit by the water. Yeah, maybe it looked like I was pouting but I thought it was rude.
She comes down to the shore and says 'Are you pissed at me?' 'You're jealous.' This is where I made a mistake. I said 'I'm not jealous, I don't care if you're banging him.' A spat insued and I apoligized. Apoligy accepted. Our night continued at an after-hours dance club. As I walked her to her car she kissed me goodnight.
I feel like a real ******* for acting like that. It's actually not my style at all but this girl is not just another girl, she's very special. I called the next morning to again apoligize and at the exact moment she was calling me to invite me to join she and her son at the beach which I did. She even said 'You need the beach. You'd be very good looking with a suntan, you're too pale.' I took that as a compliment. Had a great time, later I suggested they follow me back to my house and we'd order pizza. She said 'great, I get to meet your Mom.' (I take care of my elderly Mother and they had spoken on the phone before) Got back here, hung out, everybody had a nice time.
As she was leaving, I walked to her side of the car to say goodnight. We had an audience, my Mother, her son and I wasn't going to even give her a peck on the cheek out of respect.
She calls me an hour later after she got home and asks if I'm upset with her 'You seemed to want something when you came to the car.' I explained that I wanted to thank you for a beautiful day and simply say goodnight. 'Well you seemed upset.' I wasn't at all, I was in a great mood.
What compunds my concerns that somehow I blew it (although logically it seems I didn't) is that she's been working a double shift this weekend and the phone calls have been very limited. She called Tuesday sounded like shit, said she was sick and had to leave work to go home. I called her last night, left a meassage that if she needed anything, let me know.
I guess my question is this: Are we each being too sensitive? Are we each too nervous? (We're very much alike) Everybody makes mistakes in relationships especially in the beginning but I'm trying my damnest to do this right. She IS special. Beautiful, (A Sheryl Crowe look-alike) inside and out. I truly admire how she works hard at a nothing job to take care of her son as a single parent.
