Maybe "offensive" isn't quite the right way to describe it, but rather "antiquated". The word isn't used anymore to describe a group of people because there is no such place as "the Orient".Quote:

I'd say Chinese, Japanese and before using 'oriental' anyway and probably picked up that term when reading books in my youth/or at school where that term would be used in history lessons. We learn one thing and then suddenly they rewrite what we were taught.
Far more worrying, is that even if your country does exist, it's not recognised. Take a look on the European map....you won't find England, but you will find Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
It's like calling black people, "negroes", or "colored".Quote:

Ya just don't do it anymore.
No it isn't. 'Oriental' was never a term deliberately used to degrade a people, the like of using 'negro' was.
Oriental simply referred to the people from the Far East.
You don't know what you're talking about, "negro" was never meant to be degrading, nor was oriental, but both can make a person cringe if someone were to refer to them as such.Quote:

Negro was a term derived from 'nigga' and 'nigga' was a term used to describe blacks during the slave trade - therefore and to me, it has always been an offensive term and I can understand why it would make people uncomfortable.
Oriental, simply meant 'exotic'. The Orient, was an 'exotic' land. If people get pissed because they would be referred to as oriental, then I figure being known as 'exotic' would also piss them off.
I figure some people just like to have something to whinge about.
I don't doubt that the term is still used widely in England. However, Japan and China are so culturally different, they probably deserve to NOT be lumped together. Nowadays in the US, the term is used to describe inanimate objects, like rugs. (Which BTW, Oriental rugs came from Persia, not Japan or China - go figure.) It's an art style - not a people.
niggers, orientals, wetbacks, crackers, wops, krauts, kikes, redskins, skippies, slant-eyes, towelheads, yankees, honkies, gypsies.
there, now i've shat on everybody's cupcakes.
You forgot 'pommes'....which is what the Aussies refer to the English as.
POHM, meaning Prisoner of Her Majesty. POME being the logo on the overalls of those sent to the penal colony years ago.
So I guess being referred to as a 'pomme', I should be highly offended?
Nah, I can see the funny side of it....:)
Also, we are known as the 'roast beefs' by the French...
Should I be highly offended because I am referred to as a piece of meat?
Honestly....I couldnt care less what people call me lol
the most hottest sex is when a racist is having sex with a person he/she hates. for example if a white girl hates black people, yet is having sex a black guy using all these terms like "nigger" its a really big turn on
Why would someone who "hates" other person, have sex with that person? It doesn't make any sense.Quote:
