Pavane for a Dead Princess is a composition by Maurice Ravel. It is one of the great masterpieces of our time, but just like his "Bolero" it is overplayed by classical radio, and unfortunately often viewed as no more than "elevator music" by the average Joe or Jane IMO. [by some, not all].

Ralph Vaughan Williams is one of the great composers of our time. Besides The Lark Ascending that you just mentioned, I also recommend his Fantasia on Greensleeves, as well as, Serenade to Music, and Symphony No. 1 [also known as A Sea Symphony].

Lol, thanks for the lookup. You forgot VWs Thomas Tallis Fantasia, which is also lovely & pretty well known since they used it in Master & Commander.

Bolero doesn't do it for me. Boring. Good for waking up the house on Sunday mornings, tho, when played loud. ;)

You might be interested to know that 'Pavane' used to be the evening theme music for Classical 102.5, a wonderful Boston radio station that I sorely miss. Mbe still is. CBC2 does a pretty good job, but the programming isn't quite the same. I have a wonderful version performed by the Boston Pops/BSO, which I was fortunate enough to get to hear live many times for free as a student.

Couldn't hear anything, my audio drivers' messed up.

I love BSO performances. My wife and I make it an effort to visit Tanglewood, at least once, every summer. Your Tanglewood outings sound sweet. We never got to go; we were starving students & the series plus drive out of town was beyond our price range (we were saving for a house).

I only definitely recognize Glass & Cage of those you listed and maybe the first & last (but couldn't tell you a piece). I have some Glass, but John Cage is just too out there for me.
