I think it's okay to keep photos of past partners if they are part of the person's history in their "me" album.

I have pictures, letters and other momentos from all my previous girlfriends. I hang on to them to remember some very happy times of my life, that's all.
Unless you had cause to hate them like AJ, why would anyone throw them out?

Now that I think about it...I do have pictures still. Well actually my mom. Homecoming and Prom pictures. I wouldn't throw those out because
1. They weren't cheap
2. Those you have to keep, no matter who you went with.
Don't know where they are, but don't really want to see them.

I'm keeping the mementos in a box until I know for sure I've found them all. Then I'm going to use them for kindling in my fireplace.
