No, seriously, you should simply apologize to her for making fun of her art. If she takes it with any seriousness, she won't pursue it. Violence in MA (which I don't think thai KB is, tho) is supposed to be a last resort. You could tell her this.

Otherwise, I suggest an open sparring round with a time limit. She will probably get a few good licks in, sounds like, and then everyone is happy.

Interesting. My sensei distinguishes between sport and 'do', which is more like philosophy. Same comment about not fighting unless you have to, in which case you kill them. Ichi go, ichi e.

I tried a similar argument when I tried to get out of this situation. She told me for people like me its ok to get a beating :-(

Boxing (western) is also considered a martial art - a purely percussive one with legs being only used for defense (movement), but all the same, a trained boxer will kick the crap out of a brawler pretty predictably.

Martial Art merely means systematized combat training. How it's used is another matter. Sifu Lale refused to train anybody for tournament fighting. None of his students ever won a medal or a trophy. On the other hand, he would randomly attack with various weapons including naked blades, wait for and evaluate your defense, then step back, smile and say "see, it works." He also encouraged us to use objects that we commonly had in our hands as weapons. Taught me to use a coffee cup, pencil, lit cigarette, keys, etc. as weaponry, in addition to the spear/staff training I was doing.
