That is exactly not true. I'd love to see where it is written that young people are told/encouraged to go into the trades. If young people are so lazy and unwilling why are so many of them in college and working in crappy service related jobs ? The reason is they've had rammed down their throats that you need to do a worthless college degree. If you told a room full of young men that if you become a carpenter you'll get 45k a year once you qualify and then told them then being a carpenter will get them pussy you'd have a room full of aspiring carpenters. The opposite is usually true. Young folk are extremelly gullible and will do whatever the sytem tells them to do. There is just no way possible they're given advice to go into the trades otherwise that is exactly what they'd do.

Young men want two things: a well paying job and pussy. Unfortunately many are tricked into thinking that the trades will not get this for them when that is exactly what they will do.

I work in a company that uses temp services. I see a lot of young unenthusiastic kids coming in the doors with no ambition but to get whatever money they get and go out and party on it for a few days til they are broke. Hell even parents I work with get their kids in to work with us and same thing....texting, and just standing around until you yell at then to get moving. A lot of them don't even have a drivers license. We are not talking about teenagers we are talking about kids in their early to mid twenties. The parents complain that their kid won't get off their ass and get any kind of job so they drag them to work with us and let it be my frickin problem. Most are still living at home, being picked up by mommy after work. Damn pathetic.

My husband's company offers an actual ticketed career paid by them! and he has the same problem. He can find any young, smart enthusiastic employees. It's like a revolving door. Phoning sick, texting (again) to their buddies, taking long lunches, disappearing, not showing up on the job sites when they should be there working, making stupid mistakes because they don't concentrate, or don't even care about doing a good job. I can go on and on. It's not like they pay minimum wadge. They start at 15 to 16 bucks an hour, with benefits, without any training background needed. A company van, gas card, and tools are also provided. And they still can't find anyone that is willing to work hard. It's not even a dirty job :/

Jobs in the trades here are plentiful, and you can start without any schooling, they train you on the spot, and possibly will have your education paid for if you prove yourself. It's definitely not from the lack of knowledge of what opportunities that are out there....they just don't want to work hard.

Trust me I've had many convos with parents on how disappointed they are with their kids. Dads have their kids working with them...painters, plumbers, etc. And the kids have no interest. I have been seeing this for years. Then I think back to when I was their age, and I was working two three jobs. I did whatever from working in a club to working on cars. I was working all the time. I didn't have mommy and daddy making me go to work with them so that I would be doing something. I even went to college. That career didn't pan out but I didn't sit on my ass waiting for something to fall into my lap.

If you don't mind work, try to join the plumbers union and take the entrance exams. The work is hard, and the pay is shit at first, but journeymen plumbers make good money, while master plumbers make EXCELLENT money for basically supervising journeymen.

If as you describe you're "very overweight" you can't get into the military. They simply won't take you unless you can meet the minimum height/weight requirements, and even the "kinder, gentler" military of today isn't a cake walk. The beginning is hellish.

Why should a business owner LOOK? Surely a good worker takes the initiative in this matter. What else is their contribution? Its not like the average worker has the brains, drive or savvy to actually *create* something like a business. Hate to break it too you kid, but you are in no way *entitled* to a job or paycheque. If you are 'the shit', in today's vernacular, then the onus is on you to get out there and sell yourself as such.

Of course, a good entrepreneur is always on the lookout for exceptional talent. But that is an entirely different animal.

That's part of it. But we live in a part of the world where even $15/16 isn't that great of a wage. Not when the local fast-food chain is starting at $11/12 with no real expectation of investment in that job. So, unless your husband has a way to rapidly advance talent (to at least $20+--remember a lousy secretary at the local uni gets that) then he shouldn't expect to see much loyalty. Good tradesppl here are making $45-60+ an hour as you are well aware. That's just the current economy here. There are ways to adapt one's business model to this reality, btw.

The reason that non-retarded business owners LOOK for workers is because in economies that are not completely shit (i.e run and operated by complete idiots) it is preferable to hire someone who works hard rather than your rich mates son who really couldn't give a stuff. Holy f uck man give me a break. I'm not talking about education. Anyone can get one of those. I'm talking about attitude! and proper work ethics....they don't have it. F uckin rights we scout out for new staff, even out of province. We place ads in the paper all the time. That is why we have no choice but to use temp agencies. So we can weed out the crap. We are lucky to maybe find one out of 40 people that we call back. If we find someone we want to hire they say no because they don't want to do the on call. Again, don't want to work hard. We pay not bad for unskilled labor, benefits, retirement contribution, company vehicle, free cel phone, uniforms, tools, safety gear are provided and we do stress making sure you take your breaks...so you don't know what I have seen in my industry for the last 21 years. It's damn frustrating for us. Hell the 60 to 70 year old ladies that work at my company work harder and work longer hours than any of those young fellas.

yet you only call back 1 in 40 ? Unemployment is at nearly 10%. Someone out of those lot your just rejected was a hard worker dismissed off hand. You're just not hiring properly or you need a need agency, you don't train staff properly, give them enough of a chance, pay enough or some combination of those three.

The suggestion that there are "no hard workers" is ridiculous. The problem is clearly YOU.

What are you criteria for call backs ? I can guarantee you're dismissing people who have started at the very bottom as lazy or not smart because they've worked at maccas or something because it was the only job they could get. You can't find good staff yet you only call back 1 in 40 ? Sounds like you have a lot of pent up prejudice which is preventing you from finding good staff.

Gay porn could be a good way to make a quick buck - depending on how much it pays, which I suspect is not much.

I'm thinking of applying, Smackie. Not having to take my work home has some appeal... the on-call thing sounds less pleasing. Do you pay for that at a higher-rate or do you require it? Again, you are competing w/those $11-12 retail jobs and they don't require on-call.

@ George - you have a point about the hiring process, esp if HR people are involved. I've never seen a good candidate come through those people. How could they recognize talent? Its like asking a service employee to grade a graduate level physics paper. They don't even know what they don't know.

We pay more than 12 bucks an hour and no the on call is just part of the job....two night out of the week and a weekend every 5 weeks I think, you can trade or pay a co-worker to take your on call). If you do work on call by the labour code you are required to make time and a half and double time. If you do a job wearing your full protective gear, that is automatic time and a half if you are working regular time, double time on time and a half, etc. And BTW reatil in part time....we have no part time, it's full time.

Sorry I was unclear. I read you pay $15-16. My point is that you are competing with gormless, no-responsibility jobs that start pay at ~$12. Maybe I'm too long out of the hourly wage game, but I wouldn't think $3-4 difference very much different. I.e. some might decide the extra few bucks isn't worth the extra work you are asking.

It might explain your problem is all. Vancouver job market is not friendly for those competing for the low-wage pool atm.
