Really? I study European martial arts. You know, I've always wanted to test the European style against Asian styles. I wonder if anyone's ever done that before. Foil vs. shinai.

How funny is that. I use to fence with the foil, saber, and the ebee, for about a year and a half. Its been some time, but I think I can pick it up again pretty easy.Quote:

lol
hand skills > weapons
anyone can shoot a gun or swing a sword around (against an unarmed opponent). It takes real skill to use what mother nature gave you.
Yes.Quote:

Your brain.
Gun>brawn.
But all that other stuff is admirable at the least.
no shit, I never said that I would go up against someone with a gun. My point is that you can train with a weapon all you want, but it offers very little practical value. How often do you carry a sword or a gun around with you? I guarantee you 9 times out of 10, if you got into a real fight, you're going to wish that you had sparring or grappling skills.

I agree, I rather be a skilled fighter then a person who owns a gun. I can go and buy a gun tomorrow, hell...I can find a rifle online....but try and get fit and learn to fight well....yea...I thought so.
Why not avoid the fight all together?
I think fencing is sexy.
Frasbee says:
"Why not avoid the fight all together?"
you have much to learn grasshopper.
You can't avoid everything, plus I enjoy it a bit..I wish it wasn't so...you know....illegal. lolQuote:

But to truly know how to fight, one must engage in fights.
I can't help but think "why bother?".
I have other priorities.
Shit, I much prefer to exercise my ability to resolve conflict verbally anyway.
"What if diplomacy fails?" "What if you're cornered?"
The key my friend is not to get in that position in the first place.
It doesn't take a genius to know when to avoid whom where.
Fencing isn't about fighting, really. It's a sport with rules and regulations. It's more like a game of chess than anything else. However, I also box, so I do know how to use my hands for more than jerking off.
Fras is right, though. There are a lot of people out there who take up martial arts hoping to learn to fight. All they do is kill their survival instincts so when they are placed in a sticky stituation they don't flee or fight with fear on their sides. Instead they stand their ground and rely on the rigid, traditional training they've received, and they get beaten down by someone who has fought before, and who does rely on instinct.
