Idiocracy in America

Well, I had a recent problem with a customer service department. I was trying to pay out a final bill & they just could NOT get the darn thing right.

So, after the 4th email with not getting what I wanted, I forwarded the messages to a corporate office contact I had. Obviously, I wouldn't have been able to do that with confidence if I had been rude. I just calmly explained that I was not getting the answer I wanted & could they please help.

The next day, I had what I wanted & no bad feelings, on my part at least.

Did the original rep catch it? Perhaps, but they probably didn't feel as bad if *I* had also made them feel like crap. What happened b/t them & their supervisor is between them. And, besides, as a manager in a service business, I know its unlikely the person got fired. It was likely used as a lesson for them to improve. That's perfectly fine, I think.

Its all about *how* you go about things, Derby. I think you know you could have done it differently if you so chose. You just wanted to rip someone a new asshole that day, admit it. I also agree its about principle, and mine is to put *people* ahead of things.

I agree that holding your head high is generally the best course of action and being right instead by arguing your point correctly, versus telling someone they are a piece of shit. Generally that kind of argument holds up better. I just think as far as my situation, you have this mental picture of me demeaning this gas station worker and in reality that was not the case. I was also arguing my point based on the facts. The facts boiled down to he could not bend his mind enough to think of a better solution after trying to give me an I.O.U. was to drag his boss down to he gas station. Which is why I bounced and came back the next day to solve it his way.

So your motive was to teach him how to do his job better? I see.

Look doll, *I'm* not the one who tried to make myself feel better by ragging on some poor gas station guy for 11 cents. Don't make this my problem, its not. You said you were trying to 'teach him a lesson'. I'm just saying that if you want to be a teacher, you could learn some more effective ways to make your point.

I mean, how do YOU feel when someone puts themselves in a superior position & deliberately makes you feel like shit? :sinister:

Clearly, you didn't thoroughly read my response posts on this page or the last. I explained what I did, and did not say I "taught him a lesson" that was your misread. Or rather, I didn't go out of my way to teach him anything. But, he ended up learning how to cancel a credit card transaction! Something that if he knew how to do in the first place, would have completely nullified this entire experience. Something, that is not his fault, but his boss's.

It has nothing to do with superiority. I already *said* I wasn't putting the guy down. I didn't do it to make myself feel better by making him feel worse. I did it because I was over-charged. Could I have let it go? Sure, it's 11 cents, and if you're too lazy to re-read what I said before, I'll say it again, it was out of principal. And I really love, how you keep saying I went out of my way to make this guy feel bad, when in reality he was much ruder to me than I to him. So, I did not back down. But please, argue a perspective you didn't witness with your own eyes.

So, what was your motive then? 11 cents? Oh, wait, I bet you were hoping to make it better for the *next* person he overcharges? But, is that really what this was about?

The real question, Derby, is: if you were presented with the same situation, would you handle it the same way? Or somewhat differently?

Well that one that you quote me saying, I was just being a bit of a snarky biache to you so for that I apologize to you and for the confusion.

You keep asking me what my motivation was. Read my previous posts. You know, the longer ones.

How would I react in the future? I've been on both sides of the line. I've been the bigger person, I've stuck to my guns. I've been a waitress and worked in retail, but if I get a shitty waitress I won't just leave her a generous tip just because I've been there. I have said, and already said, I can see the value of your argument of letting stuff go. But every once in a while, something so ridiculous (as this was in my opinion) happens that you just have to ride the wave and see where it takes you.

And hey, if I had walked away, I wouldn't be having this lovely conversation with you right now would I?

$10 is a big difference. I wouldn't leave if I was shorted $10. He'd count every cent in that register twice while I watched and if he still swore I gave him a ten I'd demand to speak with a manager.

I would not leave until they showed me footage of him placing my mistaken $10 in the till or I got my money back.

My point is that I didn't give a f*ck how someone else thought I should manage the store.

I had an older black woman and her grandson come in to buy a game.

I was busy doing things and when she came up to the counter I looked up and said, "you ready?"

I wasn't annoyed, I wasn't even using an agitated tone of voice. But she looked at me, took the game off the counter and said something about how rude I was.

Apparently I was supposed to say something like "can I help you?", and she went on to say how disrespectful it was, and she mocked what I said, and told me how she worked in customer service and she'd never greet a customer that way. And for the record, I always greeted every customer that came in with a "hi, how's it going" kind of phrase.

But it resulted in me telling her to "get the f*ck out of my store!", and her leaving in a huff proclaiming she would never shop at my store again.

The way I saw it, good riddance. That means that's one less cunt of a customer that I have to deal with.

Y'see, I weeded out the customers I didn't like by giving them a hard time. Y'know, the ones that are impatient, demanding, acting holier-than-thou, expecting me to bend to their every will.

On the other hand I was very kind and accommodating to the customers that were patient and respectful. If they didn't have a discount card? I'd just scan my own card and let them know I had them covered, or give them some of our give aways even if they didn't reserve a game.

Therefore, if the person behind the counter is grumpy? I'm even nicer to them. But mistakes with money shouldn't be let go so easily.
