well ethical and self righteous are not mutually exclusive. look at some of our most prized heroes; they preach freedom and benefits for all, meanwhile living a life of selfishness and greed.

people who believe in god are people that i will always be close to. you can be ethical in the eyes of man, but what doesn't matter if you are not doing right by god?

I consider myself a humanist. I trust my own senses and ability to rationally think and I value humanity in general. I don't personally feel the need for a personal god, and I haven't seen any evidence of such a being, so its simply not something that I feel needs affect my daily life.

I respect my SO's faith and he respects my lack of. As I said, however, he's not a rabid Christian. He believes, but doesn't feel the need to go to church on Sundays, and appreciates the bible (and other religious works) as moral guides to be taken in the context of the eras in which they were written. I have a similar view on the bible, which I read as a child. As I've said many times on this forum, I think there is a big difference between faith and religion. I have no problem with the former if kept personal, it is the latter I have no use for. In this, my SO and I are aligned so there is no issue.

I'm not confused, we just haven't agreed on terminology. I have no problem with the term "asshole atheist", if you prefer it. To answer your earlier question, however, I suppose I am an atheist, since by definition I don't believe in a god.

See, again its all about agreeing on terminology. I remember this discussion with Vash. My understanding she is jewish by faith, but not ethnicity. Gets confusing when the two are the same.

So, here's a thought experiment: what will we call ourselves when we start designing our own genesets? How will this affect one's ethnicity?

Here is the mix I would like:

Looks - Indian
Brains - Indian
Athleticism - African
Health - Japanese
Upbringing (for discipline) - British or German
Military training (early adulthood) - Jewish
Education - American

Oh dear god, that's a terrible mix.

The Indians are the ugliest and the dumbest, and they have those disgusting, infuriating accents. African athleticism pales in comparison to the Jamaicans. The Japanese are healthy, but not when compared to the Scandinavians (especially Sweden and Iceland).

The British are definitely not disciplined; German discipline will give us another Hitler. The Jews can't really be given credit for military training because they're entirely funded by the US, which inarguably has the best military of all.

American education... fine. But it's only good in university or other schools that require you to have money.

It doesn't matter. All of this necessarily assumes an agreement on axioms of logic that are impossible to logically prove, which defeats the original purpose of discussing these things within the realm of reason. To be honest, I don't even see the point of discussing them at all.

Maybe it means "ethical but morally wrong"? Like in the Antigone tragedy, she buries her brother even though the king had prohibited to give him a proper burial since he was a traitor (really short version). Basically she does what she believes is the "right thing" (or as she puts it, "right in the eyes of the gods") as opposed to what is right in the eyes of society or the law ("right in the eyes of man").

But yes, it might also mean morally and ethically right, but prohibited by some religion or another.
