Actually, eyes often refer to persons thoughts. And people are usually afraid of thoughts that are beyond words, that no-one knows, deepest secrets.

I believe this is because you can make an accurate guess of what a person is thinking of, as a category of thought types, based on their eye movement.

Say for example if you ask a person to think about an emotional event in their life their eye will be still and focused into space as they re-visit the event.

If you ask them to think about their favourite song they don't need to visualize it and thus don't have to focus.

And there's a third one which is to think about someone you care about, which is similar to thinking about an event but has some more subtle differences.
