How do you feel about obesity possibly becoming a disability?
Depending on the extent, it already IS a disability.
haha fat!!
I mean, do you feel people who are obese should receive the benefits. Social Security, Disability Checks and such.
No, and they shouldn't get special parking, either.
hell no. wtf?
They already GET those things - not because of their obesity, but because of all the other problems their obesity causes, such as respiratory distress, diabetes --> amputations, complete immobility, etc. (I am talking primarily about the morbidly obese.)
in some ways it's not their fault. the right food is not as available as the shit food. the shit food also costs less and has addictive ingredients and therefore contributes to the growing problem. people need to get educated on the bullshit corporate food and what it does to the body and shown the benefits of good food. there is little or no education out there and it's absolutely shameful of each and every country and their politicians. their pockets are lined to stay quiet. fck sure look obama has employed a woman who worked/works for burger king to head up a nutritional study...now where do you think her loyalties lie....hmm. it's all about the money in the end not about people's wellbeing. do you realise that the food you eat from the local supermarket causes cancer, depression and many other mad and unusual diseases. only the studies out there are usually not funded independantly to give a full and complete picture. anyway education is the key and the responsibility of your elected politicians. obesity is a problem but it's not always the people's fault. it's simply down to their ignorance and of course the food is making them dumb too.
But for just being OBESE, no... they do not get benefits. If they develop another issue because of their obesity then duh of course they compensated. There are lot programs with benefits, even programs through the government that actually say... "Obesity isn't an eligible disability to qualify for benefits".
NO god damn way.
The obese person in question has too much control over this. There are so many things a person can do to help a weight problem.
Yes, there are special and extreme circumstance and those should be evaluated case by case. But I'm thinking the average fat lazy ass should not get a god damn penny of my money or extra benefits that come out of my taxes. Not until that person has exhausted all options to lose the weight.
Especially you guys.Quote:

Stick with the thread topic please.
Just obese? No.
The seriously psychological problems than can cause a person to become morbidly obese? Maybe.
As far as it being a self induced disability, do you all think we should deny ssdi and Medicaid to people who became disabled due to they own drunk driving, drug use or general stupidity.
See that's the thing. A lot of professionals say obesity is linked to psychological and mental health. Overeating is a disorder in itself.
overeating is maybe initially caused by a psychological disorder or trauma. but then people become addicted due to the purposely addictive ingredients and then it's a never ending cycle of self hatred and dumbing down and depression and the sole cause is the food itself
Yes, after they have been offered ONE chance to clean up.Quote:

Nope. I don't think so. I think everyone deserves a chance for better health.
fat, lazy people annoy me..those who let themselves get huge and dont do anything about it but still complain..and dress in unflattering leggings..ugh.
horseshit... everyone is born with a set of legs for transportation, it's not for height advantages.

^^these days it's getting difficult to safely walk anywhere with all the crazy drivers and no proper footpaths
haha.... that's another excuse. but the truth is, that too many people make up excuses so they don't have to exercise. if anyone really wanted to get in shape, they'd join the gym. OR if they can't afford it, they could drive to the nearest park and do some laps there. if there's a will, then there's a way.

i always feel like whats the point if there is no purpose to the walk. when i lived in NYC i loved the fact that i could walk everywhere. i had a purpose to my walk. back and forth 4 miles a day to and from work, it was great but otherwise nope, walking to nowhere i feel like a rat in a cage
Not true. Some people are in pain and it's dangerous for them to exercise.
there is also swimming which is less stressful on the body.Quote:

if there isn't a point to providing one's self with a better lifestyle and a healthier one, then why should we consider obesity a disability??Quote:

we should demand proper access to bicycles and safe ways to walk and bike around. the set up at the moment is for cars. if we demand better access to good food in the supermarkets and ban shitty death trap food and get rid of diesel cars( which is linked to rise in lung cancer in non smokers) that would be a good start to solving this crisis
^^^^ whoa whoa... c'mon, we can't even get good health care and you're asking the government to repave roads and reorganize the streets.... this is america where our lives depends on cars and polution.
wait, then again you're not in america...

I try to reserve my disgust for people's actions, not their physical looks. A morbidly obese person could be a kind soul inside.
I totally agree. It's our own problem. Maybe there should be some more information on how to get rid of it or health programs (not just for fat people). I do not believe that giving money would solve the problem at all, actually I think it would make it worse because they feel less inclined to work, more people will become fat just for the money, while we actually want to get rid of of this "disease" (which I don't think it is).Quote:

I am overweight and I feel awful about it but taking the money from skinny people is not going to help besides I'm trying my best to get rid of all this extra fat, trust me.
If we put all the fat people in the country on hamster wheels... think of all the electricity that would generate.
actually dopple you have a point. lol. think of all the energy that could be saved if some energy saving technology was hooked up to all the gyms in the world!
I gave my brother-in-law a book about small-town America for Christmas. The whole first chapter talks about how fat everyone in Iowa is. The guy's a great writer and I love his books, but all the women on his side of the family are pretty obese and it made me uncomfortable to read it. I hate getting into any kind of conversation about weight when there are fat people there, I always feel terrible.
You are a compassionate soul, starbuck. I absolutely consider morbidly obese patients to be like any other psych patient, only much less likely to be obnoxious. It kind of sucks how little compassion people have for them.Quote:

Obesity is a choice, just like smoking.
actually cb it can't be that easily explained. it's way more complex that that.
You can argue genetics and what not, which may or may not be true to a degree, but the bottom line is that if you eat too much and don't exercise enough, you get fat.Quote:

Not every obese person has a medical condition that caused their obesity, that's all I am trying to say.
