Complicated crush situation

So I don’t really know where to start with all of this but I thought I’d give this forum a try and see what your thoughts are on this situation that I’m in currently.
So let me start at the beginning.
On holiday, I developed a crush on this boy during my last week or so there. Initially I didn’t think anything of him as he was wearing an under 18 wrist band, and I don’t usually tend to go for younger guys (I’m 19, 20 in Feb). However, I kind of started noticing him after I realised he was looking at me from time to time (or so I thought at the time). Anyway long story short, thought he was cute and developed a crush on him. Naturally, I told one of my best friends about this guy, how I thought he was quite cute, and I proceeded to tell her his name which I had found out during a hotel activity. This was a big mistake on my part as this friend is extremely confident and is always encouraging me to ‘put myself out there’. So this friend then went on to distribute my number via social media to a person that ‘my crush’ knew in order for them to pass it on to him. Without my knowledge.
On the day that I had left, the person my friend reached out to, passed on my number to my crush. My crush then reached out to my friend on social media, asking for my Instagram, which she provided. He messaged me the next day on Insta, and then admitted that he had no idea who I was, and since I had no photos up, he asked for some. I sent them and he sort of remembered as he confirmed who I was with but honestly this put me in a weird and embarrassing situation since I hadn’t even planned on reaching out to him. Anyway I found out that he is 2 years younger and that he visits the same hotel every year at the same time of year – just like myself. Then I asked a question about his relationship to his brother (who was also on holiday, a question which was only intended to get to know him better) which he may have interpreted wrong or something because he didn’t respond to and hasn’t messaged since (it’s been about a month). However he continues to follow me and view my stories.
So now I’m in this weird situation where i don’t really know what to make of it, and the thing that makes it awkward is the fact that I’m going to see him next year on holiday most likely and I honestly won’t know how to act when I see him and what to do.
Anyway, I just wanted to get some thoughts and opinions from people – as no one close to me knows about this apart from that friend. What would you do in my situation? What should I do? What should I make of this whole ordeal? How do I prepare myself for next year? Just really anything that comes to your mind
*by the way, I realised I missed this out – he lives in a different country and we speak different languages, however he understands/speaks quite a bit of English.
**Also he messaged me on Whatsapp on the day he got my number - before dm'ing my friend - but I only received these messages after our somewhat failed conversation on Instagram and hence I didn’t reply to it
