Friend zone?

I have a crush on this guy for quite some time. He and I went to the same univerity, took some classes together, and we were partners for lab at some point. We used to talk through messaging and the conversation never got to the romantic level. Then we stopped contacting each other for awhile. Couple of days ago, he messaged me really late at night and wanted to catch up. I thought that it was obvious that he only saw me as a friend so I asked him what are we to him. He replied (and I quoted) "I think we're friends". I was and am still in shock. I thought I could iniate somewhat of an interest in him but it seemed like I was wrong. I have not reply to his last message and I don't know if I should even keep in contact with him. Help me guys...

He might be telling truth about you being friends. But that might be not all the truth hes saying. If a guy messages girl late at night them shes not just a friend to him. I think theres more to it. You should instead ask him does he likes you or finds you attractive.

Sometimes I been messaging girls I liked more than friends in a friendly way because I had no experience in being romantic or I was holding myself back because girl was too young or too far away from me.
Often I would give up and kept it friendly just to find out that girl is not given up yet. So I continued and beautiful things happened.

Bottom line is guy could have been afraid to admit that he sees you more tgan a friend in case you dont see him more than a friend too. Besides you kept it friendly so he answered correctly that you are friends. Would be weird and very brave if he would say something more than that.

So I decided to reply but I didn't ask him straight up if he likes me. I kind of figured it out that he's going to back away...anyway, my response was it'd be lying if I tell you that I think we're only friends. Just as I suspected, he stopped talking to me completely.
