Do we really need to get married?

My girlfriend and I have already been together for two years. My parents and hers are persuading us to settle down already. She has visited me here once and I’ve been over to her country a few times. My first time was during a romance tour, and I’ve visited her during other trips after that.
The idea of marriage isn’t so bad, but it’s not really my priority right now. I still don’t get why we have to have a big ceremony to profess our love. We can do it by ourselves without anyone else validating our promises to each other.
I haven’t opened this up to her because I have a feeling that she’s going to get upset and that’s the last thing I want. Honestly, I still don’t want to get tied up. I’m serious about our relationship but the idea of a commitment that big makes me feel suffocated. I don’t think marriage is for me and my girlfriend. We can stay together without marrying each other, right? Any advice is appreciated.

You are serious about the relationship but you don't like the idea of commitment? I don't know what that means. Can you explain more?

You don't have to have a ceremony to get married if you don't like ceremonies, you can literally just sign some documents. But of course, its not just about what you want, it is also about what she wants as well.

Some people are uncomfortable with the idea of not getting married because they have always been raised to think that way. Anyhow, either both of you come to a compromise or a break up would happen eventually.

you're right. I should be honest with her even if it means that she'll get upset. I just have some commitment issues but I really am willing to work things out and compromise with her. Signing some documents sounds good to me but I wonder how my girlfriend will take it. Thanks for the advice!
