I only ask, because a study which i read, and will post on here when i find it found that the average size of men's penis is 3.5 - 4.0 hard.

Look... I've done some research. The average is 6 inches when erect, 3 - 3.5 normally. Does this answer the question? There are a couple of sayings I know which might ease the situation:

It all depends on your partner, and her anatomy. What might be big

Are you overweight, RSK? Sometimes if you've got a lot of fat down around that can hide some of the base of the penis. If it really bothers you, you could try getting fit. Also, if you have a large amount of pubic hair, shave it off... it makes everything look bigger down there.
