Stonehenge

a mystery...one of my favorite things...what do you think it is all about? i think it is something man created long ago...and its the ruins of what was a close to perfect sculpture...it is still very pretty though!

i just started 3d modelling because i am looking toward doing stuff for videogames(like making 3d models and animations) or doing something with guitar...(perhaps making music for videogames!!)...anyway i have a program called AXELedge 1.5 and it is pretty good graphic wise..

i am remaking(perhaps adding stuff too) a game for super nintendo; primal rage(its for other systems too) in 3d...and im not so smart programming wise(i got c++ for dummies and im on chapter 3 but thats just the basics..anyways)..and i wondered if there is any programmers who are on this site who are interested in helping me program it...information wise..it is a fighting game. a really good one. the reason why these 2 topics are connected is because there is a stonehenge level in the game..and 2 days ago it took me all day to remake it in 3d...
i might just conduct a team of artists and programmers so it wont take so long to make...originally i wouldnt pay..it is just something for fun; something to do..and practice for me and you. but i would include you in the credits..if i ended up making money off of it and all that(after getting it copyrighted ofcourse) i would prolly pay a fair share to whoever helped me..it would prolly end up being a computer game.

if your interested ill give you more details if you i.m. me on aim on the screenname jonesville3189

here is a shot from the model webcam. the textures are temporary place holders until i get better ones...and the sky/background is temporary also.
hows that for my 4th model??

to those of you who think this is in the wrong section i am sorry..i thought it would be appropriate for this section.

Have a good day!

lol, I don't have anything agaist you. Currently I am going to school for Video Game Art and Design...I've been doing 3d for about 2 years now. As a matter of fact I have a class tonight and I need to head out. Working more on my clock tower

I'll post more later. If you have any questions fire away...I know pretty much everything that goes into making a game.

Oh, here's what I am working on atm. Just started using Maya so I haven't spent a lot of time on this model, which is in 3ds Max.

oh and here is a question for ya cybog...if i were to give the models to a programmer to get them to run in a game, would they be executable in AXELedge format??(.axs)

if not how could i change the format to them?

oh and another before i forget....how do i make a character model the right size(so it's not too big/too small for the level)
or making another level that is as large as the first one....

and how do i scale all the geom. (including surfaces and curves) to a bigger proportion at the same time???

Ok, I'll stab at a few of your questions.

#1. I go to the Art Institute of San Diego, California. I am studying for a Bachelors of Science degree in Video Game Art and Design. I have finished over 2 years so far, and have about a year and a half to go for my degree. You can actually get this degree completely online if you wanted to, but be advised - This school and this program is not cheap. I am paying over $65,000 for my degree, and the online degree is even more expensive. (Expect to pay an additional $6-7k more for an online degree)

There are Art Institutes all over the country, just google it and find one closest to you. Not all of them offer the Game Art and Design degree though, as it is still very new.

#2. I have never even heard of AXE-Ledge before. I assume it is a 3d program, probably a lower end one. The ones I use are 3ds Max and just starting to learn Maya. These are the main 3d aps that are used in the film and game industry today. Dreamscape, ILM, and Pixar for example use these, especially Maya. However, these softwares are also not cheap. A student version of Max and Maya can run anywhere from $4-500 or so, whereas a full licensed version can cost over $1,000.

Nor are these softwares easy to learn. The Intro 3ds Max Bible book that covers all of the basics of the software is 1,296 pages long. If you read and did the entire book cover to cover, you still wouldn't know everything there is to know about the program.

#3. If I were going to model that character, I would use box modeling and could probably have it done in a few hours. If you want to learn more about 3d Modeling, there are a million tutorials out there that can help you, but for character and box modeling I would start with this tutorial here. The "Joan of Arc tutorial" is very well known for being one of the best beginner tutorials out there, regardless of what 3d program you are using.

#4. A common misconception among beginners is that artists throw a bunch of models at a programmer and expect miracles to happen in the form of a game. While that is kind of what happens, there is a helluva lot more to it than that. First and foremost you have to develop an engine. Unless you plan on coding the entire game yourself, IE Old Nintendo or Atari games, there is a engine that is programmed these days to make games.

Think of a game engine as your own personal room. Inside that room you load all of your textures and characters and levels and environments and sounds and effects and everything else into. Once it is in that room, then you can make the adjustments yourself and create the actual physical game.

One of the most common engines these days is the Unreal Engine, which is used in tons and tons of First person shooters these days. The Unreal Engine is available for purchase if you BUY Unreal at your local store, and you can make your own FPS games with that engine.

So, unless you know someone who has a good grasp of Flash, (Another easy and cheaper alternative) you are going to have to get your hands on an Engine that is used for Fighting games.

Think of games falling into these kinds of categories - FPS, Fighter, Side Scroller, 3rd Person combat...etc. Each of these types of games has a more popular engine you would have to use in order to make your dream come true.

Oh, and as far as your questions about the file types, your Engine will allow certian types of files. For example, in the Unreal Engine, in order for me to bring a character or an object or whatever into it, I have to save it as an ASCII file or some shit, instead of the 3ds Max model file. Whatever engine you have will accept a particular type of file, and you would basically have to save your 3d model as that file type and then import it into your Engine.

As for scaling issues, same thing. Your Engine should have a global scaling (Scaling is what you call it when you resize something) type of tool that lets you resize everything once it is in the editor. (Your Engine's tool)

ok thanks cybog, im gonna start on that model now!! thanks for your help! ill be sure to PM you or something if i have more questions.

oh and that model up there that i wanna do, i plan on making it much more realistic and put a hell a lot more detail in it..so i hope you would still recommend "box modeling"

and i do have a pirated 3ds max 5.0 but i couldnt find a keygen/crack for it(that worked, i did find a few but none of them worked...) but AXEL edge is a nice basic 3d modelling program for starters!
