This is why I suggest you write the note; if you take the "secret admirer" option then you have some anonymity. Once you know what his reaction is, then you can come out and let him know who you are.
I like to do things direct. But, there is something very sweet about a girl sending a guy "secret admirer" letters, and I think he will feel very good about it.
Just take your time, and think about what you would like to write to him.
