Philosophical Utilitarianism doesn't give a rat's @ss about lost human potential. According to this philosophy, what is good is that which produces the greatest amount of happiness. It is basically the philosophy of Hedonism.Originally Posted by indigosoul
Because I am not a fan of Utilitarianism, I will agree that the profound loss of human potential is catastrophic.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?
Maybe Your Just scared of loosing it all ? Anyway Thanks for everything good you sad, it was nice to chat with You All guys and girls.Originally Posted by indigosoul

Oh, is THAT what this thread was about? Haha. Well, I've never much cared for putting myself in any particular philosophical "box". I spent quite a bit of time as an undergraduate reading about the LIVES of many of the "Great Philosophers". They ALL came with their associated baggage. Kant, for example, was forced to work as a student (his father died, leaving him somewhat financially strapped), he never married, and was (as far as I can gather) fairly sexually repressed.Originally Posted by vashti

Huh? I think that was a pathetic attempt at an insult. OK, let me clarify:Originally Posted by G-TEX
Not SCARED to "lose it all". But definitely interested in improving the lot of those I love. Helping to assure the future of those I care about, as much as I can. Continuation of my genetic material in the best way I know how. Absolutely. And, by extention, helping others as well. What else should I be doing with my life? What is the purpose of YOUR existence?:
"What is the purpose of YOUR existence?" - I don't know.
But while I'm not knowing it I'm doing the same thing as You, "Helping to assure the future of those I care about" , atleast truing.
you ladies make me proud to be a woman.
This was not what the thread was originally about, but rather what it evolved in to when OV said he held "utilitarian views", which incidentally is not the same thing as cultural relativism, as I am sure you are aware (but I am not sure OV knows this).Originally Posted by indigosoul
I mentioned before that ALL philosohpical views have serious flaws.

Sure you do. You just said it:Originally Posted by G-TEX
Now you just need to figure out HOW. And that comes with experience and awareness. Its exciting to find this out about yourself. Good luck!Originally Posted by G-TEX

ROFL!, and what is wrong with denying someone the opportunity to live? You have no idea what you are talking about, not only that, you also do not understand what I write. This argument is beyond you, leave and shut up. Cultural relativism is fact, I uphold Utilitarian views. Meaning that I know its relative of what I believe and I know there is nothing definite right about it, I just do it by choice. Utilitarian view says to avoid as much pain to a raitional agent as possible.Originally Posted by vashti

"Why are you an atheist?"
"because I paid attention in science class."
Ah, c'mon OV!! Post-hoc, along that timeline.... nothing, if that's your philosophy. BUT, before the fact... well, read what I said about lost potential.Originally Posted by Only-virgins
I know everything about lost potential, I tried to argue it on my Philo 101 paper. it also fails under the fact that, whocares what the potential is? why should I care?, fact is that it doesnt matter. Allow me to post the entire god damn reply first lol. A culture could have an opinion that potential of life is equal to shiet, nothing wrong with that.Originally Posted by indigosoul
Actually, I am positive its "dwells".Originally Posted by vashti
