To add to this: Not only is it about happiness, but the loss of all that human POTENTIAL. What if ONE of THOSE souls had been the one w/the answer to human hunger?? Or curing cancer, or ending war, or... you see my point.

Philosophical Utilitarianism doesn't give a rat's @ss about lost human potential. According to this philosophy, what is good is that which produces the greatest amount of happiness. It is basically the philosophy of Hedonism.

Because I am not a fan of Utilitarianism, I will agree that the profound loss of human potential is catastrophic.

That was before I had a family, people I loved and felt responsible for, became a contributing member of my local community. It takes a certain amount of stability and maturity (mental, emotional, financial) to be able to think about these things, I understand.

Oh, is THAT what this thread was about? Haha. Well, I've never much cared for putting myself in any particular philosophical "box". I spent quite a bit of time as an undergraduate reading about the LIVES of many of the "Great Philosophers". They ALL came with their associated baggage. Kant, for example, was forced to work as a student (his father died, leaving him somewhat financially strapped), he never married, and was (as far as I can gather) fairly sexually repressed.

When adopting someone's ideas, I have always thought it a good idea to understand where they were coming from w/them in the first place. Once you realize that the Great Philosophers, were also mere humans, it helps to put a lot of their ideas in context.

Huh? I think that was a pathetic attempt at an insult. OK, let me clarify:

Not SCARED to "lose it all". But definitely interested in improving the lot of those I love. Helping to assure the future of those I care about, as much as I can. Continuation of my genetic material in the best way I know how. Absolutely. And, by extention, helping others as well. What else should I be doing with my life? This was not what the thread was originally about, but rather what it evolved in to when OV said he held "utilitarian views", which incidentally is not the same thing as cultural relativism, as I am sure you are aware (but I am not sure OV knows this).

I mentioned before that ALL philosohpical views have serious flaws.

This argument is beyond you, leave and shut up. Cultural relativism is fact, I uphold Utilitarian views. Meaning that I know its relative of what I believe and I know there is nothing definite right about it, I just do it by choice. Utilitarian view says to avoid as much pain to a raitional agent as possible.

I know everything about lost potential, I tried to argue it on my Philo 101 paper. it also fails under the fact that, whocares what the potential is? why should I care?, fact is that it doesnt matter. Allow me to post the entire god damn reply first lol. A culture could have an opinion that potential of life is equal to shiet, nothing wrong with that.

That is NOT how the saying goes. It is "Those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it". Pretty much the exact opposite of what you wrote.
