Frasbee, so you're telling me that if a guy kept harassing your gf that you would let her fend for herself or if your friend got jumped by 2 people, you wouldn't help him out? I'm not talking about fighting over dumb reasons like someone called you stupid at a bar.

Oh ya. Way more than once two. The last one I was in which was in high school I got my nose broken, the only serious injury I have ever gotten in a fight.

To paraphrase the Magnificent Seven, you don't want the man with the scars, or in this case a broken nose, you want the man who gave the scars.

Fras is right, though. There are a lot of people out there who take up martial arts hoping to learn to fight. All they do is kill their survival instincts so when they are placed in a sticky stituation they don't flee or fight with fear on their sides. Instead they stand their ground and rely on the rigid, traditional training they've received, and they get beaten down by someone who has fought before, and who does rely on instinct.
No they don't, because if they rely on instinct then they will run...they will always run. The predator always catches the retarded prey anyways. I rather stand my ground, I am obviously not going to be fighting bears and lions but I fear no man. You assume they get beat down why? Maybe they do stand their ground...and own the living shit out of the unsuspecting dumb mother ****er coming at them.

I find that hard to believe.

Plus, I find it funny how you say that by instinct, they run... but then you go onto say that you "Fear no man".

'Course not, I'd be the first in.

I have a story about that, but I'll save it.

These hypotheticals are pretty absurd when one considers where I live, where I frequent, and what I do. There are plenty of things that worth knowing on some level. Plenty of ways people can protect themselves from this or that danger. Shit, I have a ridiculous amount of friends and acquaintances that indulge themselves in the martial arts, and I'm not talkin' about tae kwon do or nothin' like that. I could jump in on that stuff at any time. I just don't care to right now.

I'm sure you don't, tough guy.

You'll note I was referring primarily to martial arts. You can take all the martial arts you want and it won't do you a lick of good when you're facing a man who has made his living on the streets fighting to survive. That's the problem with martial arts. It's a wonderful philosophy and exercise. It does not, however, make you into a name-taking, ass-kicking machine as so many chumps with their fancy new blackbelts would like to believe.

Quite frankly, if you aren't afraid of getting hurt you aren't going to move fast enough to defend yourself. Take up boxing and you'll see it. Guys come in fresh off the street and start out great because they don't want to get hurt. And then they lose that fear and they can no longer protect themselves. Fear is a natural response to dangerous stimulus. It does not equate cowardice.

I don't do martial arts, I do mixed martial arts. I watch pride and Ufc and I partake in local kick boxing and sparring events. The fact that most people think though that everyone in the martial arts field thinks they will always win and why is beyond me, it must have been the movies who created this stereotype...I did take Aikido for a while and the instructor himself said that a fight is always partially luck. Don't care though, win or lose I would stick up for myself and that is what I meant by I fear no man. I don't go around starting fights. Fights always pretty much end up on the ground, no ground game you lose. Either way if you are scared of getting hit it doesn't make you move faster...it actually makes you panic and lose focus. Goal is to avoid getting hit, not fear it and duck.

Phaw! If he really knew how to fight he'd know better than to punch a man bare-knuckle in the mouth.
