But like you said, the key to getting by is keeping yourself busy. Like meeting your landlords druggie love crush and convincing her to get with him so he leaves you alone haha. thanks yeah, it's stressful. but I spent the last hour or so searching yelp for shops and figuring out where to find them and such, which was relaxing. couldn't find a polynesian tho..

sadly, I already paid a staggering $7 for a simple map, because I was desperate. all I wanted was to get new runners at a store I found online, as i've had mine for 3 years, and that f*cker dragged me all over downtown, without ever explaining any directions, so I just HAD to buy it.

Maybe you can even get a bus tour to help orient yourself to the city. It is HUGE and you can easily get yourself lost.

there's a thought, yeah. I'm such a map person though. maps and grids. so really it should work out fine seeing as it is one giant grid.

he's got me playing the innocent-homeschooled-farm-girl angle. bleh. there's so much still to figure out, like what kinda metrocard I should get, etc.

you'd think somebody would sit me down and say "ok, so here's this line and everything west of it is called west # street. The streets go this way, the avenues go that way, the numbering goes like this.." etc.
NOOOO! they just jump right in with super complicated addresses and think you're an idiot if you don't understand. How the **** should I know what the difference between a local and an express train is if nobody actually explains it? somehow they get so wrapped up in their own perception of the city, they cannot comprehend anyone not knowing it, so when they try to explain "so you take the local downtown.." and i'm like "wha?", they don't even know what there is to explain. however, neither of those words is self explanatory. why does nobody just go "downtown means it's going south, local means it stops a lot as opposed to the express that only stops at major stops". grrr!

In general, people are very unsympathetic to noobs. And then you are in NYC... My opinion of people from NYC is pretty low. An unusually high percentage of people from that region are arrogant asshats.
They are the stupid ones for expecting you to know all the local lingo and layout of the city.

oh, so, my landlords crack-addicted street friend seems to be staying in the apartment from time to time. she was in the shower the night before last, coughing and vomiting all damn night. And people were speaking spanish outside my room door, and it wasn't my landlord or her. hmm.. I need to move. I already packed most of my stuff and applied to rent-direct.

other than that, things with my boyfriend are great. I slept over at his place a few times. We're deliriously happy ^.^

oh, two questions:

1. I need stuff. what cheap department stores do you guys have over here? I've found those "bargain discount shops" here are like "heeeyyy! this brand-name bag for $130 instead of $500, wow!" and i'm like "yeah.. that's a simple canvas bag. I could've gotten one of those for €2 at home." But surely these shops exist here too. you know, the sort of department store where you buy a dress and everyone knows where you got it, but it still looks fashionable? you gotta have one of those!

2. we were thinking of going on a vacation... or for me, a vacation within a vacation, I guess. Only because of the work & travel programme and the paperwork crap, it'd be ridiculously complicated for me to travel outside of the states.. so.. where can we go and when's the best time (before end of august) to go? I was thinking going towards the end of august to escape the heat here, but where the heck would we go that isn't also hot at that time in the states?

Oh man there are so many places to go that are relatively close to NYC. Unfortunately if you are looking to escape the "heat" then you will want to venture up towards Maine like Giga said. Still in NY are the Adirondacks, they are beautiful. I would recommend Toronto if you could leave the US and didn't mind the 8 or so hour drive... I go to Canada all the time.

I'm not sure what type of getaway you are looking for, such as one for relaxation, historical sightseeing, or whatever. Or are you open to anything? Washington DC doesn't get too hot, but it can be quite muggy.
