Prove it. Is there a copyright statement inside the cover ?Does the Old testament have years written in it ? No. Before Jesus was born the years didn't exist. We refer to these times today as B.C. - back then there was no timeline to go by. So prove to me that the old testament wasn't written in the year 100 A.D. !

Religion pretty much started out because people 'needed answers'. People, as a race, are intellectual and want to know things. We are curious and for some reason NEED to know about things and how they work. Back in the early EARLY days (thousands of years ago), science wasn't anywhere near what it is now. Noone knew about "carbon" let alone "carbon dating". But people kept saying, "Where did we come from? Why are we here?" And religion was born. This is also why there are such a VAST variety of religions out there. THe Indians have THEIR gods, the greeks had THEIR gods, the chinese had THEIR gods (I don't know what they are, but I know SOMETHING'S there), etc. etc.

Religion also plays a major factor in governing. Old Kings and Queens used to turn to some sort of religion to make their laws. It would be wrong to kill because the bible SAID it was wrong to kill. It would be wrong to steal because the BIBLE said it was wrong to steal. It would be wrong to sleep around on your wife because the BIBLE says it's wrong to sleep around on your wife. Etc. etc.

All religions pretty much have a 'code of ethics' to follow. Christians have their ten commandments, hindu's have whatever they have, buddhists have whatever they have, etc. etc. And much of today's "morality" and "laws" come from religion. Just do a google search on religion and laws or religion and government for the various debates.

FYI - Old Testament comes from an ancient religion - Judaism, and it was written waaaaaay before the coming of Christ. As you may know Jews still don't recognize Christ as the Messiah, and there IS actually factual proof that the Old Testament did exist before Christianity as such evolved.

What really annoys me is that a bunch of people agrue and suspicious statements. You may not have faith, but you should have a somewhat clear idea of what religions like Judaism, Christianity, Islam are. It's not something you learn at Church, it's something you learn in Social Studies classes and Religious Studies in particular.
