    ancestry

So who knows a lot about their ancestry?

I am researching my family history right now. I actually just got off the phone with my grandfather who may pass away very soon. He told me that his relatives came from Germany and Denmark. I am trying to get in touch with my father's side of the family so I can find out about it.

What are some good ways to research this? Hopefully by the time I go to Europe, I will know far back enough to research the records over there.

My ancestry means little to me.

I remember my mother tried to instill alot of ethnic pride in me, but eventually it wore off. I find all that rather frivolous.

The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the largest collection of family history records in the world.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

This is a fun thread. My (I think its like 3 Great's or 4 Greats) grandpa is General Sherman. Civil War. My hubby's great grandpa is General Forrest. They fought one another in the civil war. We laugh our asses off at it. Apparently my grandpa burned GA up but believed in freeing the slaves, where Chris's family OWNED slaves. I dont believe in that shit, but were going to MS and New Orleans next month and my hubby told me not to mention who my great bla bla bla grandpa was. Apparently his family is EXTREME southern!( if you guys remember Forrest Gump, when Tom Hanks says "My momma named me after General Forrest, thats Chris great etc, Grandpa)

My moms family, another great grandparent founded Quebec Canada. And Im basically a mix of all kinds. Chris and I love that stuff!

You can pay to do a geneology online. Or a family tree research. I think you can also do it free of charge in some sites.

Fras, I actually thought of that the other day when you said you were out there. Were staying in the French Quarters for several days. Were going the end of March. That would be awesome! Another meeting! I just told my hubby. He knows Ive met several people from here. We could go have dinner one night! When is Amy going to be there?

I don't really care about ancestry. I identify myself as American. I'm German too like you but not in touch with any German relatives because they came over a long time ago

I'm also half Calabrian, but this is different because my dad actually came over from Calabria and I know a ton of relatives who live there. Sometimes they come here to North America (we're in western NY and southern Ontario), sometimes we go there to visit. A lot of Calabrian culture and attitude is present on his side of the family so it affects me, not because I'm Calabrian in ethnicity though

There is some site associated with Ellis Island, and you can look up certain information about your 'ancestors' who immigrated. I had to do this for a school project once

I thought about researching my family tree until my father told me his relatives came from Germany and were there during WWII. After that, I was afraid to find out what sort of people they were. He was crazy, and I bet they were, too.

    I'm a big Euro-mutt.

Most of my background is British, with a bit of Ukrainian, German, and other stuff thrown in. All I know is that the most recent member of my family to land in Canada was my grandfather in 1908, from Germany. So my family has been here at least 100 years.

Are those sites credible? Seems like a gimick to me. You have some fame behind your bloodline.

Well each to his own, but I think it's ignorant of you to dismiss knowledge about your own history. I feel that it is essential for one to know such things.

I'm studying the history of Germany right now. You'd be surprised. WWII was a destroyer of Germany's reputation. I hope that some day I, myself, can contribute to the restoration of Germany's pride and commonly misunderstood reputation. I personally oppose nazism and whatnot, but that is one horrible stereotype. Nazis walk among us, even here in America.

As far as my ancestry goes, my relatives migrated to the Americas before any of the world wars. Approximately 1840 ad.
