We're just West of the coastal range (where Whistler is), on the water. The rockies are farther East.
Its not like Seattle, which is more inland & not on the ocean directly.
B/c Vancouver is right on the coast, we get dumped on more. Rain if its warm (mostly), snow if it falls in a cold snap. What we get depends on the weather system coming in from the ocean & its direction. Air moving up the mtns quickly will also fall as snow as the air is quickly cooled in winter.
But, b/c we are in a mountainous area, there are loads of microclimates. Way more here than any other mtn area I've been in, including Hawaii (but that's tropical), and the Andes. A couple kilometres & being in the rain shadow of a local mtn can make the difference b/t a relatively dry home or a sopping wet (and mossy) one. Add a bit of altitude & one gets snow instead in winter. Ppl consult local rain shadow maps here when purchasing a house (and looking for telltale moss on the roofs).
Come visit someday, Miso.
