I had the luxury of being raised as a military brat when I was younger... so I had the idea of 'everyone being equal' instilled into me... so the idea of one race being treated differently than another (good or bad) is known, but still seems 'strange'. Albeit, I did spend some time in the country as well.. with a lot of whites, but had the luxury of having quite a few blacks and Hispanics living there as well. Perhaps this town was an exception, but the whites didn't really seemed bothered by these neighbors and friends... It wasn't until in my adolescence and later when I moved to different cities that I saw the race card being played so much. It struck me as odd and seemingly unnecessary (everyone was treated the same way when I was growing up... so why the special treatment all of the sudden... why the discrimination all of a sudden? etc).
I've seen what it's like for everyone to still be prideful of their heritage (I'm proud to be German... others are proud to be Hispanic, Black, Asian.. etc) but still considered one of the bunch (we're all equal here)... I don't care what your background is (other than a momentary... wow, you're descended from such and such country... ), all that matters to me is if you're a really nice person to get along with or a complete asshole... Just as it should be.
And yes, I do consider it to be shitty each race is treated differently... some favored, others looked over, and even more struggling to improve their status in society. This should be a non-issue... if you walk through that door and are qualified for the job then you should get the job --- why do they need to include your race here? If you're smart enough and determined enough, then you should have a shot at that grant --- race doesn't matter here... why is it necessary to bring it up? All that should matter is what you're capable of... what kind of person you essentially are... not the stereotypes associated with the multitude of races that exists... To include race in work, school, and marital matters is just retarded... Race does not define the heart and soul of an individual --- the individual does.
"The weakest soul, knowing its own weakness, and believing this truth that strength can only be developed by effort and practice, will, thus believing, at once begin to exert itself, and, adding effort to effort, patience to patience, and strength to strength, will never cease to develop, and will at last grow divinely strong."
