Giga, have you read Harry Harrison's 'DeathWorld' series? You really should. I think you'd appreciate Book II where he ends up on a backwards planet where the natives dig for roots & the leaders jealously guard their 'magic' technology. The hero steadily works his way up the grunt ladder by doing things like making a Leyden jar and they are, well, blown away.

when it comes to needle nosed pliers... you don't need a craftsman tool.. a k mart one will do sufficiently.. but in your case. you need a set of loping shears.
