I don't really understand what the big deal is, here.
Some people have had paranormal experiences, which they know/are convinced/are certain are caused by non-physical/spiritual/other-dimensional entities or whatever you want to call them.
Everyone else can agree that those people really did have those experiences, but choose to attribute them to tricks of the mind.
Even if you choose to attribute them to tricks of the mind, the fact remains that the mind only works in that "cool" way in certain people - not everyone. Those who have not had these experiences often would like to have them because they sound novel.
Why can't we just leave it at that?
Don't cry, don't regret and don't blame
Weak find the whip, willing find freedom
Towards the sun, carry your name
In warm hands you are given
Ask the wind for the way
Uncertainty's gone, your path will unravel
Accept all as it is and do not blame
God or the Devil

My mind is open to anything that comes with a hint of proof. The merest hint and I'll consider anything. However, my mind is completely closed off to people's feelings and personal experiences.

God, so atrocious in the Old Testament, so attractive in the New--the Jekyl and Hyde of sacred romance.

If people are good only because they fear punishment and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed.

You're right. Sigh. No summoning magical barriers to hold off the Ring Wraiths for me, I suppose.

Kwisatz Haderach, Nerevarine, you name it, I am it.
You know something... I can't stand the current crop of science fiction/Lord of the Rings/etc... and had to look up what you were implying in Google, just as I had to with Indi's Dune references.
My fiction started and ended with C.S.Lewis and it was the times and what my relatives thought to be great gifts for the kids, not what we wanted though.
Your sarcasm quite frankly sucks major pole.
I've never intentionally summoned a damn thing in my life, at least anything metaphysical and I prefer to keep it that way...
But what I have done, as previously mentioned, was to be so concerned about my safety that I'd try anything to find some sort of protection or reprieve. And that's in the context of attending a number of parochial schools against my will since the earliest years, so you can imagine how I normally felt about prayers to some fictitious entity which burnt shit scented incense and made us attend church 4 times per week, 3 of them just to practice for the 4th.
I was fearful of my soul. They were after it. I freaked out and started babbling christian poppycock. I was suddenly, yet marginally, safer.
Those two mother****ers did their best to get through and I thought they were going to.... but the barrier held.
Whatever, whomever, however... I don't know. Though I do know one thing. There's something greater than us out there, and if you wouldn't mind not being a total dick about it, I'd really appreciate that.
Doc,
I can't help but finding that you're being very defensive about this sometimes.
I for example stated in a previous post that I would love to have a paranormal encounter, but everytime I think I may have such experience, after closer examination, it turns out to be something that easily can be explained by natural causes.
Maybe I have a more analytical mind, maybe I simply don't let my immagination play tricks on me, maybe I am not 'openminded' enough (eventhough I believe that I am very openminded), maybe I have the guts to actualy check out what is going on, maybe, maybe, maybe and maybe. I don't know the answer to that.
The bottom line of all this is: there is not one single shred of (f)actual and reproducable proof that such phenomena exist but in a persons mind. When proof is requested, the answer is always (without exception): personal experience.
Therefore, I have no choice as to conclude that paranormal phenomena only exist in a persons mind and it is my opinion that certain people experience this as real, just like sometimes people can't make the difference between dreams and reality.
To me, this explanation is satisfactory.
All the rest, is open for debate and argumentation.

Sometimes I feel a chilling feeling on my shoulders... as if some ghastly form were putting its arm around around me.
Sometimes I see shadowy figures in peripheral vision. But as soon as I turn to look in their direction, they disappear.
Sometimes I feel the presence of someone walking up behind me, or standing behind me.... but I turn around and there is nobody there.
