God, so atrocious in the Old Testament, so attractive in the New--the Jekyl and Hyde of sacred romance.

There is no point of arguing with some people..A lot of the times, there are ones who will just say things just for the sake of arguing...I had friends like that who continued with constant garbage and no matter what you say it doesn't mean anything...I can respect a person like Indi simply because almost every time she makes an argument it's hard to go against it...Others, there are so many holes in what they say and they don't even see it.

No! Not at all!
or gribble instead of mocking them, educate them and THE REST about their freedoms and opportunities to develop into more understanding, tolerant, less driven by ridiculous social status people, and for goodness sake stop listening to the silly untrue crappy rhetoric media that spread this bullshit.

Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's watching
Is it silly rhetorical media?
After 9/11, the ONE Muslim girl in my sisters grade told her, verbatim "I can see where Osama bin Laden is coming from" in reference to the terrorists attacks, just months after it happened
Of course, some of you motherfucckers will try to justify that
A quote from me- "I can understand why the KKK would want to carpet bomb Mecca"
Justify that too while you are at it, please
You are so full of bullshit, Eco.
You can lead a horse (or an idiot) to water but you can't make them drink. The onus is on the learner to express an interest in learning. If they can't even do that, then what? Its like trying to explain things to you: you don't want to learn, you want to make your points from some utopian dreamworld you don't have the first clue about how to actually achieve. You are fluff without substance and enable these assholes w/your kid glove attitude. Bleh.

Aren't you a true believer in the 'critical thinking', Indi? If so, then don't you think eco's comment is to a point valid? If you teach kids how to think and not what to think, wouldn't it work better? A lot of these kids are really bright students..how is it possible not to get through to them?

The trouble is, Asip, is so many young people today have adapted to our PC culture. They EXPECT that their crappy ideas should actually be given equal billing with the better ones out there. Like I said before: not all ideas are created equal.
So, should kids be taught critical thinking? YES (of course)
But what happens when they have been brainwashed from a young age into a particular belief system whose very purpose is to undermine those processes?
Sometimes, shock therapy is the only way to get through. You should see kids (by this I mean young adults) who get a failing grade for poor work for the first time in uni. Something many have never gotten in their lives so they got complaisant. Know what they do? They come and argue/demand a better grade (b/c, mommy and daddy have PAID for it, dammit). LOL.
Look at some of the idiot posters here. They want their crap ideas to be treated with the same respect as the better ones. They take offense when you tell them *why* your idea is better and they can't defend their own. If they continue to insist and you call them out for it, you get called arrogant.
But, check this out: They come back. EVERY TIME, to see what else you have posted. So, at that point the info is going in, but they can't overcome the ego to make the leap to acknowledging it. That's okay tho, if education is ones goal. A shift in thinking is just a matter of time then, and people assimilate ideas at different rates.
Some students immediately crack down after that first crap grade. Some learn by having to repeat the course, some realize that particular discipline isn't for them. Its all good. Point is, SOMEONE had to be honest enough to tell them how things really are. That's the job of an educator, in addition to providing the tools to be able to make these decisions.

lol..nice way of putting me down Indi...'some of the idiot posters here' haha..i know that includes me..all good, i don't take offence to that. I know in what i believe in..It's not a perfect way but nothing is. As i said awhile back, you make really good points and the site on critical thinking is a good place to learn from. It's hard to argue with a lot of points you make so i give credit where it's due.
