or try to come up with some smart ass comment and hope she finds it funny ?

I wouldn't approach a guy in bar alone unless I am alone there too and you are a good looking guy. Most girls would not approach a guy at all. You should go with a conversational starter. The one where you ask "'Hi - did you used to go to such and such a school, you look familiar" sounds alright. And if she answers then introduce yourself. Don't start with a compliment until she has talked to you for awhile. And don't try to be funny or witty when you are usually not like that. It comes out as awkward and pretentious.

your approach makes sense if one truly doesn't care if he connects with someone or not, but if the goal is to have a hope in hell she will even bother speaking to him, he had better care a LITTLE if he is creeping her out.
