little bit of a problem

I have been married for 3 years and my wife's brother (who lives halfway across the country) has been struggling with brain cancer. About a 6 weeks ago the doctors told him he has two weeks to a month to live. my wife left work and went to spend two weeks with him when she found out the news. When she came back we discussed that she would go back for his funeral when he passes. this is where the problem comes in; she was laid off from her job and is still yet to receive any kind of unemployment comp. and will not be back paid for the a month of work she laid off for. Yesterday she got a call from a family member telling her that her brother was put on oxygen and he was really starting to loose it, now she is insisting on going back home to be with her brother. This is all happening while we struggle because we have little money and with the money we have we need to pay bills and buy food with. We are still struggling to pay late bills from the last time she went home. I know this is her brother and I have no idea what she is going through but it was pretty much implied that the last time she went home was to say goodbye to him. I am aware that even though the doctors said he only had a month to live he could very well live a decent amount of time longer. Last time she went home for the last week she said she was only eating once a day and i had to wire her the little money i could afford just so she could eat.
I do not know for how long she intends to stay this time but I know that if she stays for more then 3-4 days we both are going to run out of money. I don't know what I should do or how I should go about doing it. If anyone has advice my ears are wide open.

you need to call your morgage provider, and explain what has happened, I'm not sure about employment laws where you are, but your wife should have taken compassionate leave, and if they are aware of the situation, they are in the wrong for terminating her employment.

ring all of the utility companies up, tell them what is going on and they should be able to arrange an extension for the due dates of bills.....

It is a tough time for your wife, the last thing she will be thinking about is where the money is going to come form, and you need to be supportive of her, especially as once her brother passes she is going to need all this support to get back on her feet and find another job.

take action on the above, you should be able to buy some time, in the mean time I would also have a go at getting an advance on your pay, or a bank overdraft....budget like hell and you will get through this.....best wishes
