Here in NYC we tip for EVERYTHING. Restaurants, coffee barristas (tip jar! your favorite thing, Vash!), coat check people, bartenders, cab drivers who take us on deathrides (whee!), manicurist, haircutter, etc., If I got angry everytime I had to fork over a tip, I'd have super-high blood pressure. I figure if I don't want to tip, I'll just not take a cab or eat out or get my nails done.
Honestly, though, you're better off with a tipping custom in place than being automatically charged more. At least with tipping, you have the option of tipping less if you feel the service wasn't good. Just tip badly or not at all. You either tip to reward someone for good service or you do it out of social pressure. You're never forced to.
