So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
basically, I love my co-workers...except when one gets in a certain mood where she feels like ordering me around and I am her superior!!!! do this, do that, she says..as if I am some kind of dumn wit!!! then there's my boss who I generally like a great deal except for the fact that he loves to come into work around 4 pm and have tons of work for me to do such that I have to work late!!!!!

Thaks Gig and QC. To tell the truth, It would hurt ME to fire her almost as much as it would her. She was my first Secretary, back when I didn't even know if the business would fly or not. She has always been mega-supportive, both personally (my divorce) and professionally. It's just her f**king memory, that is the problem. I just made a decision while typing this, not to fire her. I'll have to appoint her customer relations secretary (which she's good at), and take a wage hit for a new secretary, but I value loyalty too high, to dump a friend. If it was intentional, it would be different.
I don't think so, Gig. I don't want the other two girls to be pissed or think that they have been passed over. I've talked to her many times about this, but she seems to have a mental blind spot as far as short -term memory goes. When we were a smaller company, it wasnt' as important, now that we've grown it is becoming critical to move her someplace else.
Okay, remember the movie Splash, where the secretary shows up with her bra on the outside of her blouse one day? This is what I imagine when I think of your admin.

LOL, yes that's her all right. We once had to unlock her car twice in one day , because she left the keys in it. Now she leaves an extra set in my desk. I've got several stories like this.
Reading about everyone else's co-workers makes me really appreciate mine! they have their own peculiatrities, but they'd be right there to help me in an emergency.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?
Nothing wrong with matching up a person capable to a particular position...plus, that's what friends are for... not for bullshitting.
(although if you never have to explain it to her, it's a bonus under the current Relations environment of the international workplace. Here's hoping that she appreciates and thrives in the new position.)
I've had to play PR-person all week for co-workers making major mistakes. Nothing like picking up the phone and having someone scream and manage to use the work f*ck in every sentence in new and creative ways every time. I would say it's entertaining, except that I don't like being lumped in with the 'idiots' that make the mistakes. It helps that the mistake-maker always seems to be off the day that the irate person calls or comes in. Also doesn't help that I'm the only sucker that likes to pick up the phone.

She should really know why you're moving her, too, Perry. It might help her work at becoming better at remembering. I don't have the greatest memory, but I've learned to get around it by writing EVERYTHING down that I need to do. I have pages and pages of "to do" lists, but at least I don't drop the ball.
I also want to say, that I think it's pretty cool that you didn't fire her completely. So many companies will just drop you like a hot potato if you mess up. There is little job security anymore, so it's nice to know that bosses can be loyal, too.

I've always believed that loyalty is a two-way street. I will rarely fire anyone, unless it's for (repeated) willfull dishonesty or violence , or drug/alcohol abuse. I try to be understanding and flexible with my employees. My office Ladies are "Mrs. Forgetfull", my HS sweetheart, and a former pornstar (a big name, you guys would recognize it if I told you) and they are ALL great women. Completely loyal, and absolutely honest. Some of my guides/managers are HS buddies, and guys I was in the Army with. We are more like a family than a business, and that's how I always wanted it to be.
Not really, it was 4 years ago, she had bleached hair, and implants. Now her hair is back to it's natural (and much prettier dark brown) she had the implants removed, and almost seems like a different person. I think the world of her and her family.
