Why would ANYONE shove it into a mouth. Seriously I can't help you if you think that serving something like sharkfin to me (or meat to a vegetraian) and not offering any alternative is alright. I'm pretty sure most normal folk would see that an alternative should be offered in these cases. What I ask for is a big deal but what I am willing to settle and accept is that she simply order 1 less bowl for the anti-shark folk, just like you'd order 1 vegetraian meal for the veggie.

That's right... cower because you made a blanket statement which did not apply to all of the 440 plus variants of shark in this world.

Take for instance, Mustelus Antarcticus... (The Gummy Shark) which are in no danger of being overfished and are prized for their wonderful flesh.

Next time state, "Some sharks are facing extinction" and we won't have this problem. Capiche?

i think that if you have a problem with that, and you are the only one out of a group, then you need to order your own food or bring it with.

Hypothetically, if Anne had been offering to pay for a dinner outing and had her really expensive shark fin bowls from her home country rejected she could just as easily as in your case feel offended and disrespected, because all of a sudden it's an issue that is dear to her heart (national identity in "our best soup suddenly isn't good enough") , monetary gift-giving and trying to share an experience of hers, and then you would essentially have a copy of this from another tack.

People have different values and interpretations, if it's such a major issue that you don't think you want to deal with you have the right to shut things down, but then again sharks is just one of dozens of examples of unsavory practices that you could encounter in daily life, for some issues people will care and for other ones not,and that's what to expect and not always go hardline on changing people's minds on the spot and breaking off because of one different opinion.

People don't do that at weddings! What almost always happens is that the couple will order however many alternatives and that is what those people eat. Seriously, don't you know that? And I am not the only one, there is a whole table of anti-shark fin soupers attending this wedding, we're all friends and we're all at the same table.

I can understand this perspective, and I hear ya on the cultral tradition bullshit and the respect thing. But as it stands, I know why she is ordering it she said it. So it's not a cultral thing it's to flaunt her wonderful chinese status. Either way, I've have refused shark fin multiple times and never once (that I know of) has anyone been offended that I refused to eat it.
