They weren't repressed individuals trying to hide their atheism out of fear as you suggest. Your analogy to gay people in Saudi Arabia does not stand
I didn't say they were trying to hide their atheism, I said that at the time they couldn't be anything else. They'd never make it in their field if they weren't Christian at the time. If they were born in the Middle East they'd never make it if they weren't Muslim. How many other Copernicus's or Newtons that didn't fit the right Religious profile I wonder were out there who were shunned for being of incorrect dogma. If they were born today, I doubt they'd take Religion seriously, most would be looking at it like Christians looked at Greek mythology.

Second of all, you don't address how it is that engineers vote Republican most often, and journalists vote Democrat most often. I thought Republicans were the fanatical religious ones
I've never read anything that shows all engineers voting Republican and all journalists voting Democrat I'd be interested to see the evidence for that. There is hard evidence though that a lot of Republican vote comes from the bible belt and most bible belt states are Republican strongholds.
By the way Evolution is a "hard science". I challenge you to find a credible Scientist who proves it false.

Don't cry, don't regret and don't blame
Weak find the whip, willing find freedom
Towards the sun, carry your name
In warm hands you are given
Ask the wind for the way
Uncertainty's gone, your path will unravel
Accept all as it is and do not blame
God or the Devil
