Is he interested?

About a week ago I was forced to sit next to this guy in class. I already knew him, never talked to him or something, I just knew his name. At first I was kinda nervous because he is like that popular guy and I'm very shy and don't stand out at all, and I'm only comfortable around people when I feel like I really know them.
But then he started to make a conversation and it went very well, and I noticed that he was kinda nervous too. I thought that was cute.

And after that, he remembered my name, and I'm sure he didn't know my name before. I was surprised by that. And also, our eyes meet each other all the time. How can I tell if he likes me?
Because even if he liked me, nothing would ever happen because he is popular and I'm shy, right?

I really don't know what to do, because if he lookes at me often, does that mean that he likes me?
Should I smile at him when he lookes at me?

people need to stop thinking that just 'cos one person is 'popular' and the other person a mere mortal that they can't fit together. anyway.... you can't really tell from that little knowledge. maybe he does, maybe he doesn't. wait and see if anything else happens.
