    NDM-1 will kill us all!

NDM-1, which stands for New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1 is a gene (DNA code) carried by some bacteria. If a bacteria strain carries the NDM-1 gene it is resistant to nearly all antibiotics, including carbapenem antibiotics - also known as antibiotics of last resort.

Carbepenems are the most powerful antibiotics, used as a last resort for many bacterial infections, such as E. coli and Klebsiella. The NDM-1 gene makes the bacterium produce an enzyme which neutralizes the activity of carbepenem antibiotics.

A bacterium carrying the NDM-1 gene is the most powerful superbug around.

They have found this bacteria in Canada and 3 American states, and it's all over Europe . eek.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

Is this some kind of newly developed bacteria?

I am sure scientists picked it up in most distant place on Earth just to study it and accidentally spread it around.

Anyway, we are too dependent on antibiotics. Our bodies create antibiotics also, therefore I haven't had the need to take artificial ones, ever.

What do you mean all over Europe?

Then be it, then we die, ****ing deal with it and live on.
    Don't expect anything.

Do you think you can do it before it makes its way to my hospital? MRSA freaks me out enough as is. Thanks, darling!

Booba - it's apparently a new(ish) mutation that is more resistant to treatment than are the other superbugs already out there. I don't believe in conspiracy theories, though, so I won't go blaming science.

I believe it was originally discovered in India. Spread to Europe through people who visited India for cheaper medical treatments.
I have the same sentiment about antibiotics. I wish there was a better approach.

Should be more regulation in regards to antibiotics. Only young children and the elderly should have access to them with the exception of the extremely ill. Elderly's debatable. Not sure there's much purpose in strengthening germs by preserving people in advanced states of atrophy to begin with.

i think the problem is worse in developing countries where you can buy them over the counter without a prescription. And the people buying them are not even educated on proper usage - ie completing the required dosage. so then more bugs become resistant and these bugs of course spread back to countries with strict regulations.

i dont know the solution to this. we should all just chew garlic

Or let people die as they're supposed to so this world isn't swarming with starving, breeding imbeciles. Hm. Perhaps NDM-1 and its ilk are nature's response to human audacity.

Only the strongest will survive. There can be only one!

    Don't cry, don't regret and don't blame
Weak find the whip, willing find freedom
Towards the sun, carry your name
In warm hands you are given
Ask the wind for the way
Uncertainty's gone, your path will unravel
Accept all as it is and do not blame
    God or the Devil
