its ok to prefer what you like. but he did it in a way that made his girlfriend feel bad. you are right that communication is the real issue.

I've already pointed this out. (Dishonesty, communication issues, strange behavior, etc.) But there is a discrepancy between the way he is acting vs. using toys and stuff for masturbation.

Things are not going to get better, but worse. Once he is tired of a fake vagina, he will go back to a real one, but not yours.
This pattern is rather common for men who are dissatisfied sexually. Often times it has nothing to do with their partner.
It's almost an obsession or addiction. He doesn't consider your feelings. He just needs his immediate urges taken care of.
