It is ok for him to game, and I can tell that pinkbunni knows this very well, but her bf is here clearly not just having a hobby.
So imo, yes: there is a time and place for everything, including hobbies. I would not expect my partner to give up his hobbies, nor will I tolerate that I would have to give up mine.
But using gaming, or just plain anything to avoid responsibiliy in life is a whole different area.
You're jumping to conclusions here. He's not using gaming to avoid responsibility - there's nothing in the OP that even suggested that. It's not his responsibility to spend time with her.

It's the stereotype that really bothers me here. If it were his schoolwork, or actual work, or a sports team, there would be nothing wrong here.

I dated a guy that was so obsessed with watching every Red Sox game that when October rolled around he told me, "Just so you know, we've made it to October, so I'm going to be watching every single game. So, it'll be a difficult month, especially if the Sox aren't doing well." I appreciated the heads up, but I thought it was a bit ridiculous that he somehow thought that whether they won or lost depended on his watching the games. He literally planned his whole life around baseball games.
